Runflats

Any body had any experience of running runflats on their van , I'm currently running Banded Steels 9" front and 10" rears and although I do have a spare it doesn't fit the spare wheel cage....so runflats are an option ..... we've run them on an X1 BMW with no issues.......any info appreciated.

No experience of running them on a van, but had them on a Beemer (320D)... and HATED them. They drove like I imagined the stone wheels on Fred Flintstone's car would drive - very hard, constant pitter-patter and the drive never felt settled or planted.

Is there even a commercial vehicle weight rated run flat? It's my understanding that in the event of a flat tyre the vehicle weight is supported by the tyre wall...
I had them on a Cooper S and the car was almost uncontrollable....driving over cats eyes threw the car towards the kerb, they lasted 5k miles before being chewed to bits, and I'm no "thrasher" Changed to conventional tyres and the car handled "normal" and lasted 30k
I wouldn't gamble the cost or the ride by using run flats on my van.

No experience of them on the van and to be honest I wouldn’t put them on even if you can. As the others, I’ve had them on a Z4, 120d and a Mini and they were awful. They are simply too stiff and hard giving a horrible ride and poor grip in wet and slippery conditions. They are also very expensive. I got rid of all of them long before they were worn. Usefully there was a good secondhand market for them so got nearly enough to buy some proper tyres!

Simple answer; don’t do it unless you have a good chiropractor and are deaf to all the rattles that will develop as you drive along the roads. Carry a small compressor, some tyre worms and sealant, and have breakdown cover

Congrats on a thread with total consensus amongst the respondents - a rare feat on the forum. :D
TBH I thought as much ,but its always nice to have opinions from other's just to clarify things....plus it keeps you all awake ! ;)

Freakin annoying things! SWMBO has them on her Cooper S. I changed the front two a couple of months ago - circa £150 each. Two weeks ago, she picked up a screw in one: new tyre as they aren’t allowed to repair a run flat tyre! Another £150 out of pocket! Argh! (Would have been perfectly repairable on a regular tyre!)

Now I'm going to buck the trend. My F11 535D has a mixture of brands of run flats and I think it rides really well.

Once they are all worn, I'll replace them with a matching set, but I think with regular tyres simply because of the cost.
