Service interval

My van has just ticked over 8500 miles and it's telling me a need a service in 1000 miles. I've had her just over 9 months. I've phoned the stealer and he seems to think that it sounds about right.

Is it?

It's going to get bloody expensive quickly if I need to have a service this often. Not even 10000 miles yet...

A quick search and…

4 months and 3500 miles here and service message now showing. There’s no reason why they are all different ?

Is that from brand new I.e. the van is only 4 months old and has done 3500 miles?
Yes. The Van was pre-registered (71) but I had it on Oct 1st 2022 with delivery miles only. I assume it’s time sensitive from date of registration, regardless of the fact it was not used and was effectively brand new.

It’s not brand new though, it’s a 71 plate & it’s asking for a service in accordance with the service schedule. Did you negotiate a service with the dealer when you bought it? It can be set to extended servicing which is around 2 years or 20k miles. It’s all explained in the post I linked to above.

I Had the same last month, rang the dealer and they said first service is 18000 miles bring the van in and we will reprogram the service reminder, reset the service reminder myself…
so did and oil and air filter change myself last week..

Thanks for that, I will query it with the VW service Centre. I purchased the Van from a Motorhome dealer who are a Platinum Wave Campers dealer. Not going back to the Motorhome dealer, they were awful !

Tbh, I’d just get it serviced. Assuming it’s the first service, it’s only a minor & you then have a clean start. There may be warranty implications if you skip the service. For perspective, I’ve just changed the cam belt & water pump on a 5 year old Yeti (same engine as a T6) and it only had 18k miles on it. These are the costs of ownership

Yes I agree, I will see if I can get it changed to the 18k after that, as it does suit the way I use my van.

It's booked in for next Tuesday so was always going ahead with the service. I'm just surprised as I've read that they can go to around 18000 miles before a service. It must be, for whatever reason, the way I drive. I bought a service when I purchased her so I'll be using that. I'll probably pick up a black friday deal later this year for further services.

You could change oil and filter yourself. Reset the miles counter and get it serviced at 20k miles or 2 years.

As I've paid so much for the van, I'm happy to let VW do it, for now.

I've just checked the service plan and I think it's a 2 Service plan so I don't feel so bad now.

My van is on extended servicing I.e. 20kmiles/2years. But this isn’t an absolute, it depends on how it’s driven, what conditions it’s driven in & your driving style. So it can be anything between 18-24months OR 15-20k miles. BUT! As I intend to keep the van long term & it’s a high value investment, I take the van to my local independent & have an oil service with OEM parts & oil, in between dealer services. I’ve never heard of an engine failing because it was “over serviced”

Diesel in the sump will kill all the engines with dpf, soon or later. 5k miles oil and filter replacement for my Van. Like the old days.

Occasionally get a Miller oil analysis and check for fuel and other contaminants, note this will be of less use if doing a short interval (5K) oil change.

Hi, I have a 72 plate T6, it was first registered July 29th 2022. I had a query dropped by my local dealer for advice. When there I asked about the servicing, it’s decided at the point of PDI as two how it’s set up wether it be yearly or two yearly or offcourse over mileage and yes from date of registrationnPDI.

I was delighted to know it was set on the 2yr cycle. Albeit first service is Oil & Fiter general check all function of lights brakes, gear change, clutch operation ETC and maybe? A Pollen filter which would add to the quote of £320.00 I think not. £320.00 for oil change and filter.

I will use another trusted Mechanic/Company and have them provide a written receipt, as we all know as long one utilises genuine parts VW aprooved filters ETC. We dont have to utilise the registered dealerships to keep up our warranty, no wonder VW dealerships have fancy coffe machines snacks on hand to go with. No wonder it’s £320.00 for oil change & oil filter. And I’d imagine there mechanics only get say £15.00 per hour at best to in wages. Even permitting £80.00 for oil and new filter. Where do they get off charging £320.00. Absolutely horrendous.

if you take the service plan with Vw the cost its not horrendous. And extended warranty is worth every single penny to me. Last time I have taken the van in to replace dpf matter sensor, it ended up with 4K pounds bill!
Almost fell of the seat when I looked at the invoice. Only minutes after they told me the job was done under extended warranty.
T6 is an expensive machine to keep in good order. Reliability is decent overall but size, weight and loads of electronic doesn’t help.
At 52k miles I am on my second brake pads set and the front disks soon need replacement . I sold my golf VI with original front disks and pads after 100k miles.
One little stone cracked the front wind screen
Yesterday… money money money…

Mine went in yesterday for a full service and MOT. 46000 miles 2017 150 DSG. Cost me nothing on the day as I’ve got the service plan which covers 2 years of servicing, 2 years roadside assist, 2 MOTs and 2 years warranty.

It’s going to cost me just over £800 for 2 years which is a bargain in my eyes.

If your van is eligible it’s a no brainer.

IMO the van should run without any issues at 6 years old and 46K miles. Your only costs should be planned services, renewing consumables and MOTs.
I think in general drivers are starting to accept that all vehicles have frequent issues, that should definitely not be the case.
I’m not saying that your £800 quid isn’t well spent, just that some have low reliability expectations of what is a modern and expensive vehicle.
One of the many reasons that manufacturers and dealers take the piss at every opportunity.
