We had been thinking about making a removable Slidepod Seatpod for a while but were trying to gauge demand for one when talking to customers at shows etc. We decided around 6 months ago to set about designing one.
The brief was pretty simple in that it must....
- Be removable from the van.
- Fit any medium sized van.
- Incorporate a Slidepod kitchen and a Slidepod utility storage drawer.
- provide a seat in the back of the van for 3 people that converts into a full size double bed.
- Make the Kitchen and Utility Slidepods interchangeable to allow use of the kitchen in the van.
- Design a comfortable seat that transitions smoothly and effortlessly into a bed and vice versa
We never intended to set out designing a M1 tested seat as we felt that there was already plenty of these out there, many of which work with one of our Slidepod designs and also the engineering involved would have pushed the price point right up and we were determined that we wanted to be able to manufacture this product and market it for not much more than one of our other Slidepod offerings.
We displayed the production prototype at Campermart this year and some of the more eagle eyed of you may have spotted it on our stand but yesterday we handed over the very first production model to its owner.
To the best of my knowledge there is no other single stand alone product on the market that is removable and gives you your (non travelling) seat + bed + kitchen all in one.
Once we get the photo's back from the photographer we will post some up. In the meantime we intend to sell the first 10 units for £2999 and we hope to keep the price point there by making production as streamlined and fast as possible however this may go up a little if we cannot get the price from our suppliers down on a couple of components for volume orders or if they take substantially longer to produce than we envisage.
Initially they will only be available for collection from our workshop however we are looking into producing assembly instructions for the seat seaction to allow us to ship it globally like all our other Slidepods.
As always we are interested to hear what your thoughts on the product are and we know that for those wanting rear M1 seats it is not a viable option (but remember we have several solutions for that already) but for those not needing an M1 seat we are hoping it will represent a great quality, versatile solution at an attractive price point.
