Starter Battery not chargins from CTEK MXS5

Hi all,

TLDR: CTEK MXS5 connected to the lower dash cigarette lighter socket, charger cycles through its various stages over a few hours but doesn't actually seem to put any volts into the battery - any ideas?!

Full version: Van is a 2022 T6.1 150PS T30 converted by Rolling Homes, with a tracker and a dash cam so expect some drain.
Did a two hour motorway run then didn't use the van for two weeks. Sunday 15th, it wouldn't start so jumped it from the NOCO pack, 1.5h motorway run that day and the same back the next day.
Wednesday 18th drove Oxford to Castleton (3h), camped for 4 nights on hook up, wouldn't start and had to jump it again in a snowstorm.

Both events seem about normal based on people's posts here.

Tracker battery voltage was showing about 12.7V some 3 hours after the drive back from Castleton but inevitably dropping, so being home for Christmas, I thought I'd put it on the CTEK MXS5 trickle charger through the lower dash socket as usual, but no increase in volts recorded. I disconnected and reconnected the charger a couple of times, and sometimes it ran through its cycle for a bit before the error light came on, and once it started to charge OK - inevitably just after I'd called out VW Assist, so I unplugged it again! They ran diagnostics on the battery and declared it good, and couldn't see anything wrong with engine charging, but figured leaving it on the trickle charger was a good idea (and driving it more!).

Since then the CTEK has apparently run through to its fully charged state successfully, but there's still no sign of the battery voltage increasing. Feels most likely a fault in the charger, but all ideas welcome!

Thanks

Martin

I understand that the cig sockets on a 6.1 are not permanently live. Maybe try the charger direct to the battery (neg to a ground point nearby so you aren’t bypassing the shunt).

Do you have a factory second battery ?
If so the cig socket could be powered from your leisure battery and not the engine battery ?

No, it’s aftermarket. Using the cig lighter has worked previously which is why I wondered if I’d fritzed something :-(

Will try direct connect to the battery / vehicle earth later as a check on the charger

Quick update after being away for 10 days: van _just_ had enough juice to start, took it out for half an hour or so to warm everything through, came back, plugged in the charger to the cig lighter, and it all just charged... Only thing I changed to before Christmas was removing the (genuine CTek) extension cable just in case that was the problem.

Now I daren't unplug it in case it doesn't work again!
