Hi all - apologies for the long post. I’ve searched the forums but couldn’t find exact issues I’m having so here we go (I’m not a mechanical expert hence including as much info as I can).
We have a 2017 (March) VW T6 2.0 Transporter, covered almost 150k miles, with full new camper conversion undertaken in July 2023. We bought it in August 2023. Not long after getting it home the van wouldn’t start, dash lights on and beeping as per picture (apologies for quality of pic - it’s actually a video which I’ve screenshotted as can’t post video on here). Eventually however, without doing anything, it did start until happening again about a month later (September 2023). Managed to find a mobile mechanic who came to house and connected to VCDS. No faults coming up but did diagnose a “pin issue on the ecu”if that makes sense to anyone? He took battery out and looked at all the pin connections, checking each one and found a couple of wires that were loose - tightened them up with tape, gave the ecu a spray to try and waterproof and van started like a dream, and remained that way until June 2024 when same starting issue shown in the pic started again. However this time, after leaving the van for an hour or so and coming back to it the van would start no problem but the airbag warning light on dash would stay on. Drives absolutely fine with no problem.
This would happen intermittently over few days whilst waiting for garage appointment, whereby wouldn’t start with dash lights on and beeping, leave for say an hour then would start with airbag warning light on dash staying on. It tended to be the mornings that the issue happened, regardless of outside temperature and at first seemed to be just when we’d had rain.
Independent garage (VW specialist) looked at it July 4 2024 - no faults coming up on VCDS. They found some corroded wires, one between battery and engine, and possibly main earth wire. Replaced those and van started perfectly for 2 days…
July 6 2024 same issue again as per picture, there was heavy rain but after 10mins of trying it started (we were going away for a week in it) with airbag light staying on. Stayed fine for the week we were away, starting each time with airbag light staying on when starting.
July 16th 2024 - back to independent VW specialist for a full service. Still no faults shown on VCDS. No issues found as part of service and van was perfect afterwards, starting with no lights staying on afterwards.
That perfection lasted a couple of days - same issues as per picture, however, would leave van for an hour or so, try again, and then would start fine but with airbag warning light staying on. Rang garage, suggested it might be an issue with ignition switch so had a brand new one fitted on 24th July 2024. Again it was perfect and this fix lasted for about a week before same old issues.
Back to garage and this time had a brand new upgraded battery fitted on 2nd August 2024 as they thought there might be an issue with battery talking to ecu. Again all was fine up until about 2 weeks ago where the same old issues started again. Now though it is taking longer from not starting at all (back to the issue in the picture), or sometimes engine starting but then immediately dying, to then starting but with airbag light staying on. This is regardless of temperature, time of day (although does seem to be morning mostly) and weather conditions
Before it goes back to garage again as we think the last thing it might be is starter motor, has anyone experienced anything similar and what was the resolution (if there was one!).
Again apologies for long post, almost at wits end here!
