T32 Kombi questions.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the budget I had for my camper dream has been slashed and I'm starting to look for alternatives. I must confess I went to look at the Transit Custom Sport, at the time I thought my dream was over so please go easy on me! To be honest it was a very high spec van but I knew if I bought it I would never get my camper. So I did a bit of thinking which doesn't come easy to me.
My new idea was to buy a second hand T6 Highline panel van in the Indium Grey and get it converted when finances allow. Today, whilst surfing I came across this,

I have a few questions which hopefully you can help me with:
1, Is a Kombi a good base van for a full 4 berth conversion or is a panel van more suitable?
2, Is a T32 Kombi classed as a car or a van?
3, Will I get hit by the new Road Tax rules in that you pay £500(i think) in the first year plus the normal road tax? When I looked at the Ford (boo, hiss!) the dealer told me the new rules do not apply to vans, is that right?
4, I understand the T32 is a class 7 MOT is there anything else I need to know?
I have done some research but I seem to be confusing myself even more. Sorry for all the questions. Cheers.

1 Depends on who you talk too, there are pros and cons ie rear windows are already in but you are paying for rear seats you don't need etc etc

2 All transporters (PV or kombi) are on logbook as class N1 = commercial, so a van

3 Havent researched this properly but have heard vans are exempt but it is based on standard RRP price of van when new

4 Technically due to weight it would fall into class 7 but as its under 3.5 tonnes there is a rule that states it can have a class 4 MOT if it meets dual purpose, expect varied responses from garages though most will go class 4 but you will get the odd one that says it has to be 7, if this happens just go elsewhere if needs be

Hi Motor Caravans only require a class 4 MOT. Commercial vehicles 3,000 kgs - 3,500 kgs need a class 7 MOT.

We were advised to go the Kombi route when buying. Windows etc were mentioned, but I gather the Kombi has a slightly stronger bodyshell, so it made sense. Our converters gave a buy-back on the redundant seats and mat, so all good there. Be aware that it will be subject to van speed limits until it's been re-registered as a motorhome / camper. Ignore the naysayers who will assert that the N1 taxation class is what determines limits, it's not.
