First thing to consider is LED aftermarket bulbs are not legal for road use.
This is because some are absolute shockers - a danger to both the driver and other road users, because they do not control their light properly. Usually this problem stems from poor design and/or manufacture although installation of some units can be problematic.
I’ve found the best performing halogen upgrade bulbs to be good enough to not bother about wanting to change my headlight units. Typically I stick with Philips. I have used Osram and they can be about as good as Philips in terms of brightness but Philips seem to be the best spread of light and have always lasted longer than the equivalent Osram.
With that in mind if I were to dabble with LED replacement ’bulbs’ I’d stick with the Philips brand. Their quality of manufacturing and their extensive testing likely means you’d be less likely to get any risk of bother at MOT time AND, more importantly?, have a decent product that will help you see better while lasting a good while. They also manage heat better which some of the cheaper ones don’t apparently. Philips have been lobbying governments for a while to allow the legal use of aftermarket LED ‘bulbs’ so they are clearly confident they can meet standards required and aren’t going to risk all that time and money spent to date buy selling a dangerous product.
Philips’ most recent LED unit is designed to have a base just like halogen bulbs so that it fits even shallow backed headlight units as you get in some motorcycles and cars (some struggle to get the rubber dust cover on with some units/bulb combos).
Last bit of advice, for any upgrade bulbs in, is to use an authorised seller. Either Powerbulbs or Auto Bulbs Direct. There are many fakes of both Philips and Osram especially on marketplace websites (eBay, Amazon etc).
