T6 Flooring height

Hi all,

Can anyone clarify when a standard step can be used and when a caravelle step is needed please.

T6 SWB, stripped back to bare floor. I'm fitting 9mm packers but then I can't suss out what I need next with regard to thickness of sound deadening and ply.

I see a lot of people just use deadening with no thermo liner, and other converters who say they dont bother to insulate underneath the floor at all.

What is the standard these days?

Ultimately want to end up with the step sitting on top of the vinyl covered ply floor.

Thanks in advance

I don’t know the answers unfortunately but I know the standard step is there to cover the metal floor only. If you put anything on the metal floor then you need a higher step. People generally go for a 12mm floor on 9mm battens and a raised step appears to cover that for most.
What I have found out is that 9mm battens are actually a little too high for the ridges in the floor (they’re more like 7mm) so this may have have become good practice to take into account for “something” being between your van floor and ply floor.
Now I’m a firm believer that wood is a pretty good insulator, so I won’t be putting any down myself personally, but I will still be sound deadening it with some stick on sheets (which are 2mm thick).

Could always email a company and state your plans for the floor? Ask them if it will cover?

Thanks a lot, you raise some good points.

I was considering reusing the 9mm floor which was removed as it was in great condition and a perfect fit but now you've mentioned 9mm not being an exact fit for packers, maybe the 12mm floor will offer a little more rigidity

Seems a waste, if you’ve got the 9mm floor there’s no harm in trying it first. The preparation required underneath is the same so just don’t fix it down, lay it, see what it’s like and if it’s too bouncy then swap for a 12mm. I plan on using 9mm for the floor but only because I’m fitting a laminate floor that’s another 8mm.

This threads got some useful pointers.

Good plan cheers, had it not been such. Good fit I'd have been less inclined to use it but sounds like worth a go

You may have seen this, but if not, here’s the finished floor levels and the step required for each:

I think the Caravelle step might be OK for you.
I went with a Reimo floor and it has plywood underneath which makes it quite thick. There are other threads with the same question and various photos of depths.

The external step to top of moulding appears to be;
Caravelle 9.5cm
Kombi 8.5cm
Panel Van 6.5cm

I used 9mm packers then covered the whole floor in the 6mm dodo superliner. I then screwed 9mm ply on top, added Altro vinyl on top and this all fits perfectly under the replacement kombi height step.
The dodo squashed down to virtually nothing quite quickly and the floor has no undue flex. It's been down over 4 years and gets a fair bit of use.
