VW Caravelle 2.0 TDI CXHA -
Hey everyone,
I'm in a bit of a crisis and need some urgent help. My 2015 VW Caravelle 2.0 TDI (engine code CXHA, possibly swapped before I got it) broke down mid-highway, and after some troubleshooting, I confirmed the timing belt snapped.
I sourced a 145x23mm timing belt (145 teeth), which seemed correct, but it's shorter than the belt I removed and doesn't go around the water pump properly. However, the old belt also had 145 teeth, which is confusing.
The only marking on the old belt is 15 173 54 01 08, but I haven’t found any useful info on it.
The Issue:
The new belt doesn’t fit, even though it’s listed as 145x23mm.
The old belt had 145 teeth but was visibly longer.
Possible explanation: The tooth pitch or belt length is different, or the engine setup uses a non-standard tensioner/pulley configuration.
What I Need Help With:
1. Has anyone encountered different belt lengths for the same tooth count on a CXHA engine?
2. Can anyone decode the old belt number (15 173 54 01 08) or cross-check what belt I actually need?
3. Are there alternative belt options that might fit better?
4. Is there a way to confirm if my engine has a different pulley setup (since it may have been swapped before I bought the van)?
I’m currently road-tripping around East Africa, heading towards Kigali, and I’m stuck in a remote area, so I really need to sort this out ASAP. Any advice, part numbers, or insights would be massively appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
