Tailgate gas strut failed.

Last year I fitted a pair of new uprated gas struts(1200nm). On Sunday I lifted the tailgate for about 5 mins, then when I closed it there was an almighty bang. On lifting the TG again I could see that the left hand side strut had jumped off it's ball locator at the top and the top of the strut wss jammed in the recess near the tailgate hinges. I have removed the strut from the van but with all my might I am unable to depress the strut against the floor - it just won't budge. Can anyone tell me please, are these things prone to fail, should I be able to compress the strut by hand even a little bit. It seems to have locked out in the extended position. Any advice gratefully received bofore I buy a new replacement pair.
Thanks

Regarding compressing the strut by hand - Your strut is 1200 N. You need to weigh more than 120kg, and do a handstand on it to compress it.

When you fit it, there is a clip that locks it into place on the ball, they shouldn’t come off.

Thanks, I will stop trying to compress it by hand then.
When it let go both of the metal retaining clips where in place andcwhere still in place even on the end that came off.

After further investigations it would appear that socket in the cup with the metal clip at the top end of the gas strut has failed by elongating out of shape allowing the end of the gas strut to jump of the ball when the pressure of closing the tailgate is applied. I only fitted these new in May 23 and really only started going out in the van this year. The manufacture name on the strut is INSUPPA. I don't want to buy the same manufacturer item again - can anyone suggest a reliable product at 1200nm. I don't have a cycle rack, only a window, sound deadening, insulation, carpeting and a small table fixed inside the tailgate.
Many thanks

I bought mine from Transporter HQ and they're 1200NM I think. Currently holding up a spare wheel and a ladder!
