Tailgate opening by itself

Hi
Looking for advice for my t6 18 plate tailgate
Recently my rear door mechanism started opening itself, kept opening.
Then stopped working altogether.
I have changed the solenoid but still no power.

Can anyone help me locate the fuse that operates the rear door

Fuse diagrams and many other useful manual extracts are available here.
If it’s still under warranty let VW take care of it.

I can't see your reply for some reason
I've paid the annual subscription aswell

Van is out of warranty

Pretty much just need the fuse diagrams I hope

Maybe this will help

Hi did you fix this please

Hi John
The short answer is no. Its my brothers mini bus and he has rigged up a rope opening system to open the tailgate from the sliding door after disconnecting the solenoid.
The BCM is clicking away under the dash so fault may lay there.

Mine has started opening by itself when it is unlocked with the key remote.
It doesn’t do it when locked.
Has anyone more up to date information please.

Is yours a powered tailgate?

If so an unlock - release - hold unlock sequence will usually trigger the tailgate (so long as parking sensors think there is space)

Possibly if you have a failing switch in the remote it might be triggering that?

Hi @roadtripper and thanks for your reply.
No mine is not a power tailgate but it’s the switch in the handle opening lock on the first catch.
The tailgate doesn’t open because the weight of the door prevents it from opening past the second catch on the lock.
It has done this when driving but the rattling has triggered the power latching tailgate to pull it fully closed again.

I'd be tempted to put a replacement boot handle on it, if you haven't already..

Quick check of the connector terminals with it all apart for water ingress / corrosion.
It will only activate the switch when unlocked as the wiring is controlled by the body control unit, so doesn't operate the handle when locked.

Hi @Phil_j89 and many thanks for your message regarding the wiring.
Yes it does only happen in the unlocked position and then can open anytime parked or driving.
Can you confirm that the wiring isn’t connected to the power latching mechanism?
Also the van is still under warranty and would this fault be easily diagnosed if it is intermittent?
Some mornings I will open the van and it will do it 5 times in ten minutes and other times I can be all day without any trouble.

My 19 plate T6.1 has started doing this.

For a couple of days the handle wouldn't work (I had to use the key) and now the handle works again but it's popping itself open. It won't do it whilst driving, but the moment I come to a stop, the tailgate pops. Today, I glanced at my wing mirror horrified to noticed the tailgate was wide open. Thankfull nothing had fallen out of the back.

I'm guessing a trip to the dealer?

My 6.1 is such a lemon. I don't think I'll be able to buy a Transporter again.

what I found when looking at the handle was the rubber seal between the handle and bodywork had opened up letting water into the inside of the handle.
Dealer replaced it under warranty as the van is under 3 years old.

Interesting. There has always been a gap at the top of my handle - maybe that's letting water in.

Yes mine had a slight gap and I’m not sure if the rubber seal was originally bonded to the handle around the edge.
If not, it’s only going to be watertight if fitted tight against the bodywork.

Yay, something else for this MY21 T6.1 owner to obsessively worry about :cautious:
