THQ V3 Headlight LED vs HID

I have newly installed a pair of THQ V3 headlights on my Caravelle. I also paid for the LED H7 'upgrade' and to be frank I'm a little disappointed. Perhaps as I came from H7 headlights already I didnt see so much of a jump in performance.

The main issue is the shadows left by the LEDs, no matter what orientation I feel the light is compromised, I even removed both headlights again to confirm the holders are correctly seated.

I cant help but think the biggest issue is the fact the light only comes from two places and think HIDs would give a better light distribution. The areas that are bright are very bright so I think this would work well.

Has anyone had similar experiences and changed these lights from LED to HID? If so what kit? 35w or 55w?

Thanks!

If you search the forum for THQ and LED no doubt you’ll find many opinions.

There was one thread updated two days ago on the same subject but I can’t get my link to work!

I have thq lights and I have tried the 35w HID kit, thq led bulbs and H7 nightbreakers.
By far the best is the HID followed by LED then H7 Nightbreakers

I know exactly what you mean by the shadows, no matter the orientation you cant get them perfect and thats the nature of the LED bulb. The HID will solve this issue.

The only downside to the HID is the ballasts are bulky and the wires will need to stick out the back of the rubber dust caps on the rear of the light units. not a major issue its just a bit more obvious come MOT time. Beam pattern is perfect as its a projector in the THQ lights its just technically not supposed to have HID to the letter of the MOT test (same for the LED bulbs)

I’ve got V3’s with the THQ LEDs and a well happy with the light output.
They work great.
I did have a shadow in the middle of the drivers side but got that to disappear by rotating the LED bulb

This is exactly what I was after thanks, someone who has done the upgrade. I have no issues with the HID units and worst comes to worst I have my old H7 headlights I can swap back in at certain times should I need to!
Is that HID kit the exact one you used? Cheaper than the bloody LEDs! Should have gone that route from the start!

yes it is, its also the one recommended by others on here. you wont be disappointed!

I've fitted the latest thq Audi style full led Headlights and they are superb. No shadows and perfect light spread. It's like daylight in front of the van. I have xenons in my 5 series and led multibeam headlights in my a35 and the van wins both hands down. £899 may seem pricey but they're so worth it and they're cheaper and brighter than the vw factory led headlamps. For the sake of a couple of hundred quid more the the thq v3 plus led bulbs it's a no brainer. Anyone thinking of upgrading the candle oe ones I strongly recommend the audi style ones

I’m seriously thinking of fitting these at some point, really not enjoying these dark wet nights with the crap headlights, is the light white or is there a slight blue tinge to these headlights?
The cost of retrofitting OEM led is now over 3.5K.. think I could fit night vision to the van for that cost

The thq audi style ones look better, are brighter and cheaper than the oe ones and they come with a 5 year guarantee. It's a white light. They have internal motors too which work with the height adjustment wheel on the dash. No coding needed and the functions and appearance of the lights can be customised by clicking in some colour coded plugs on the back of the lamp. Never been flashed by anyone driving in the opposite lane so don't appear to cause glare. High beam is amazing too. Fully e marked too so mot friendly. There is a thq video on YouTube about these lamps explaining everything. Worth a watch.

I've just had the Audi style lights installed yesterday and was driving on some dark B roads last night and the difference is unbelievable. They are a fantastic investment and well worth the cost you will not be disappointed

That's the same as my experience, got THQ lights, I tried Night breakers but wasn't impresses by the output, tried LED's, there was just too much light scatter and not a great beam pattern, so I bought HID's (35W). They were so much better, as good as the factory LED's on my wife's car. It's since gone through 4 MOT's at different garages, no issue, and no other motorist has ever flashed their lights at me.

Which ones did you go for?

Hi Irishnutjar,

I bought and fitted the transporter HQ audi style full led ones for my t6.1. If yours isn't a t6.1 they won't fit. If you do have a 6.1 you'll find them on the transporter HQ website. Not cheap but extremely worthwhile investing in them. You'll be amazed how good they are.

Waiting on the new loom from THQ as I’m still getting the warning light on the dash from the Audi style LED lights. Apparently new loom available at end of November or offered a refund if this doesn’t fix the issue
