Thud, Thud, Thud, Bang…

Hello clever T6 folk.

Here’s a little scenario for you to consider. I’m interested in your thoughts on this…

Thud - the satisfying sound of my passenger door closing
Thud - the chunky (and still satisfying) sound of the sliding door closing
Thud - the barn doors closing with a solid, meaty feel
Bang (with what feels like vibration and a sort of ting type noise) - the frustrating and annoying sound of my drivers door closing.

The van has been into a body shop and it appears the door was out of alignment (see pic which was taken with the latch off). I’m told it’s been fixed, but the door still sounds a bit “tinny” and it’s just not a “satisfying thud close” like I get with the other doors.

This is probably up in the stratosphere of insignificance as far as van problems go, but since the drivers door is how I get in, it bugs me every time I get in or out!

Any thoughts what could be causing this??

Thanks in advance.

Has the door / door skin been replaced? I wonder if there is a lack of sound deadening (butyl sheets) stuck inside the door.

Ian
Hi Ian
Honest answer is I have no idea! I've had the van about a month and it was brought from a dealer who specialise in converting panel vans to day vans… I’m not sure if the door has been off or not.

Could be the internal fittings need adjusting on door ..I’d return with your concerns

you’ve got all this stuff that needs to be refitted correctly after repair

ps…if that picture is after body work ..it’s out of alignment

pps. Unless you know the full vehicle history the door could have been in an accident and not repaired correctly ..push the dealer for answers

Possibly the door being opened uncontrolled in a very strong tailwind, I bent an Audi door slightly that way.

Hi VanDamMan
The pic was “pre body shop”, so hopefully it wouldn’t look like that if I took the latch off now!
History wise, what I’ve managed to glean about the vehicle since buying it (from a dealer on the other side of the country) is this:
1. It’s an ex rental van, probably on a guaranteed buy back from VW but I don’t know which rental company it went to and VW won’t tell me (god bless GDPR!!)
2. The front wings and bonnet appear to have been resprayed according to my local VW dealer (which invalidates my warranty for alignment issues - thanks VW ) although the VW dealer reckons the respray might have been done by VW themselves on buy back from the rental company. So potentially the respray done by VW themselves has buggered my warranty
3. The body shop (an independent outfit, but the one my local VW dealer use) reckon it’s not been crash damaged because it’s still an original bonnet, but the door may have been off - don’t know why
4. My local VW dealer have looked it over and not spotted any obvious crash damage to chassis or suspension.
5. V5 docs don’t show previous keeper details anymore. More GDPR there…

So all in all, I love my van, but I clearly didn’t research it enough before committing… I’m muppet by name on this forum for a reason!!!

Looks like a lot of door internals to check there… fun and games!

I think you’d tell if a door skin has been changed as the folded edges & seam sealer rarely look the same as oem.

Hope you get it sorted…just inspect the the striker plate for any marks to eliminate alignment….

I’ve made loads of mistakes…..your in good company

Have you solved your problem?
My driver's side door makes a cranking noise as it moves from one notch to the next. I think the roller is worn in the middle on the lower hinge.
There appears to be replacement hinges for £76 for T5 but I am not sure if T5 and T6 hinges are the same.
I would welcome any comments.
