Tight Yorkshireman and insurance shocker

Ok so found a van

T32 high line

No claims , no points kept on drive 13k miles last year and 25 years NCB ( I know that's not possible but you know what I mean never had a bump)

Current car is one of those horror stories you read about in the sun , you know because it runs on leccy it's such a rip off , except I don't mind paying 500 quid a year to insure a 60k car

But transporter says hold my beer 961 quid for a van can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong with the meerkat

You haven't really provided enough info for people to help. What are you using the van for? What value did you declare for the van? Where have you tried to get a quote from? Do you have a separate NCB stream to use for for the van or are you trying to use NCB that you're using on another vehicle? Where in Yorkshire are you located?

Commercial insurance is always more that was only reason I asked and they won’t except NCB from my personal insurance for car so it’s like starting a fresh

Driving to a place of work on Sunday parking it then driving home Friday I declared it at the 37k it's listed at , the meerkat site , yes I have my leccy car with 25 years private and 9 years on the commercial which is my own company so two separate policies The Mrs is having the leccy car and I'll be getting shot of the pickup to replace with a van so can use either policy I also have 5 years on motorcycles again separate policy I'm in Sheffield sat Sunday and Reading without giving too much away it's a very secure place where I leave it

Ah didn’t realise you had commercial insurance to yes it is steep I just renewed mine right pain in the ass and bloddy expensive (also T32 not sure if that makes a difference)
Ended up doing fleet insurance and added business partners buzz to it which came out cheaper than insuring both separately plus anyone over the age of 30 can drive them which is handy with the lads that work for us also

Ok, so what business are you in? What business class did you ask for? Did you specify carriage of goods? These factors will have a big impact on your premium, as will the fact that the van isn't parked at the home address overnight for a majority of the time.

I suspect, though, that you're already aware of the above and that what you're really asking is why is the van so much more expensive to insure than your pick-up. On that question, I can only suggest the answer is a combination of each vehicle's base insurance group (assigned by the ABI) and each insurers' prior claim experience for each vehicle.

It just seemed anomalous, no carriage of goods requirement as we don't make anything anymore , I figured I could use either NCB , when I went from my own policy to having commercial NFU just gave me 5 years for good behaviour on my own personal policy they did say they could use my private policy and give me max discount but it was 60 percent then 1 percent every year after so no real point and as it was 340 is to insure my l200 I wasn't that fussed company paid it ,

Times are tighter now though and I could do without laying out for two vehicles even though one is personal and one company car

Like I say I commute to a place of work park it then drive home friday

I suspect most insurers wouldn't accept this as "commuting use" simply because of the overnight parking situation. Still, you started the thread with a quote of £960 and now have a quote of £450.

Makes you wonder how the travelling folks get insured as I'd never though of it like that, where do you park your van , anywhere
