Tools for a roadside spare-wheel change

I've been so lucky I haven't had a flat tyre or I would of been stranded. My van came with 20" Wheels and a 16" spare which isn't ideal but I hoped it would get me home.

I've recently fitted new brakes to the front of my van so I needed to swap my spare for a 17" steel to clear the calipers. It arrived yesterday and easily fitted into the spare wheel holder which is when I noticed a problem. To remove the spare wheel, you need a 19mm hex socket which comes with the van, but my 20" wheels need a 17mm hex. So I'm unable to get my wheels off with the 19mm hex wrench supplied by VW.

To make things worse, the bolts for the alloys are tapered and the steel wheel needs a rounded seat, so I don't have any bolts which I can use to bolt on my spare! I've now ordered new wheel bolts for the alloys with 19mm heads and 5 standard VW bolts for the spare wheel. Until they arrive I've relying on the AA if I get a flat.

Don't get caught out if you have different wheels.
 
I carry a tyre string kit that can help in some circumstances, like a nail in the tyre etc.
 
I had the same problem but now carry one of these….
As well as 5 vw bolts

I carry a good quality sliding T with a couple of tubes, 4” extension and a six sided socket. Putting the torque through one bar can cause the locking wheel bolt key to tilt over and then you have a problem.
Putting the torque through two bars 180 degrees apart with both arms is better.

I've had these in my garage for about a year and never got round to doing anything with them, would be good as spares or for restoration.

Free to good home (to first person that messages me directly) as long as you collect and take all three.

Came from a 2016 t32 Shuttle and removed as I bought a complete new set with tyres.

No centre caps or bolts

Ok folks, where do you store your tools for changing spare wheel?

I've just bought a van, And see the jack screwed into the rear cargo area. But the other items like nut breaker bar etc are just in the passenger door card. I'd rather relocate these somewhere not rattly, but wonder if there's an OEM solution that my van seems to have not got?
 
In my Kombi I've got a black plastic, heavy duty storage box (from B&Q) up against the back of the rear seat, bunjeed to the tie down points. I've got all those bits plus a tow rope, straps, jump leads, tow bar, yellow jacket etc.
I was loathed to put anything in the boot but at least in a box it's all neat and secure. Packed in nicely so it doesn't rattle too!
 
I just wonder where they are put when you get the van new? I might have to do the same to be honest. Space under the rear seats is likely the best spot as you say.
 
Are they not part of the plastic cover that fits on the jack? Admittedly, I've got a 2 foot breaker bar with a 17 and 19mm socket, rather than the toy bar that it came with...

I noticed the two sockets needed when I fitted the locking nut to the spare wheel, but didn’t know about the different wheel nut size needed for spare , !!

Also when I got a puncture fix last week the fitter had trouble removing the wheel nuts with a bar, and had to use the main power gun!, now if I had to change the wheel myself on the road I may have struggled!, so this weekend I will be taking off the wheel nuts and applying some grease just to make sure!!!!

Don't do that!! That's asking for trouble as greasing the threads means you'll likely over torque the bolts (not nuts). Also, dry threads help to prevent them coming undone.
They should be torqued to 180 Nm and re-torqued at around 100 miles after installation.
Torqued properly you won't need a pneumatic gun. Using the OEM bar however, is a bit optimistic.

I carry both a 17mm and 19mm as my locking wheel bolt adaptor is larger than the bolt heads.

I’ve just been talking to the site fitter, he said the same!, he did suggest clear silicone small dab!
 
I keep all this (and a lot more in mine)

- 2t trolley jack
- trim tool/pick to get the Davenport covers off
- M18 ugga dugga for wheel bolts
- M18 angled impact driver for the spare wheel carrier
- breaker bar
- torque wrench
- gloves
- old blankets for lying on :)
- various impact sockets for wheel bolts even if I only need one size I am a good Samaritan.

As alluded to above, everything is in this box.
It used to be up against the back of the sseats but I moved it so bikes can fit in easier.
