Tyres wear on inner edge

I've had my t6 from new but I put the 18" t5 sportline wheels on after 500 miles with some landsail 235/45/18 tyres. My van hit 7000 miles today and with it coming into winter I thought I'd change the wheels back to the standard 16" as I was changing the wheels over I noticed that both passenger side tyres were pretty much bald on the inside egde. I don't drive the van hard so it has shocked me that after 6500 miles the tyres have deteriorated this much. Anyone else experienced similar?

I also just changed my summer 18s over to winter 16s after 9k miles, but didn't have any uneven wear like that.

Mine are 235/50 but I can't see why that would make a difference. Is your van lowered?
 
I had Sportline 18's on from new and 30mm drop from dealer. Noticed outer edge tyre wear after 2k miles. All 4 rebalanced and Hunter wheel alignment done. Mine was a mile out.

Then after that it's tread type, pattern and the compound. Rainsport 3 wore very quickly but evenly. Kumho ecsta lastef ages but wore the inside edges first.
 
Yes the van is lowered 50mm on eibach springs. I have put the standard wheels back on for winter so will go and get them aligned and see what they say. Cheers
 
I had the same issue on my T5. I had all alignment done and still ended up paying out for new tyres every 3-4K miles! Becomes expensive. This is another reason I don't think I am lowering this time round. It looks great and is great on occasional use vehicles, but if you are using the van every day it can be like this. Just check alignment etc in case it can be rectified on yours and hope it can.
 
Same on my T5.1 too - totally knackered inside edges at 14k miles - the rears lasted over 20k.
Not aligned when they build them. Keeping a close eye on tyre wear on our T6...
 
It's recommended that you have it done after lowering, I had my alignment done straight away after dropping 40mm, it took VW two and a half hrs to do but they do a thorough job.
 
I get mine tracked twice a year, however I usually go through 1 1/2 sets of Tyres in that time. It's usually out by the time I get it done.

Tyre wear causes tracking to move out of alignment, pot holes and driving like a hoon.
 
Had mine serviced the other day and was told tyres are starting to scrub. Went and got it 4 wheel laser aligned. Mine is dropped 40mm, but it came from dealer like this, so not sure if the dealer had it done as a mod or it was factory specked. Either way, it proves you need to keep on top and get it done at least annually (use dependant) to reduce the tyre bill.
 
Definitely worth getting the alignment done - costs about £60-70, a prematurely worn set of tyres costs probably 5-10 times more.
 
So I went to get my wheels allingned tonight but I think they only did the front as when the mechanic asked me if id like to take a picture of the results it was just the front wheels. I may need to seek another garage that does 4 wheel allignment. Also the mechanic informed me that on the t6 there is no way of adjusting the camber.

Yep, I was told the same about the camber.
 
Yer you can only already the toe on the t5 and t6. Camber can be adjusted but you need adjustable camber bushes.

You won't need them. Toe wears tyres far quicker than camber.

I'd go back to the garage and ask why they couldnt match the toe angle on either side. That's just lazy.
 
I did ask about that when I was there but the answer I received was that that amount of difference was nothing and as long as it's in the green it's ok. I'm going to take it to another garage and try to get more answers

Wherever you take it, make sure it's four-wheel Hunter system that they use.
 
Might be worth going to a VW specialist as you always tend to get very general responses from general garages.
 
Thank you I have tried a local version specialist but he doesn't have the equipment to check the camber angles etc
 
you've got me wondering now.......mine's had a barely perceptible pull to the left from new......I did wonder if it was the camber of the road? Anyway......this Hunter system......silly question, and I suspect I know the answer but I'm reluctant to let someone mess about with my alignment if they don't know what they're doing.......so, is the Hunter system foolproof or is it possible for a poor operator to make things worse? Like I said....I think I know the answer?:thumbsup:
