Under 25 Insurance on a Fully Converted Van

Anyone on here under 25 and managed to get insurance on a fully converted T6 van?

Currently 23 and looking to buy an already fully converted van and struggling to find anyone that will offer insurance with an agreed value...
Majority of places just instantly wont accept anyone under 23.

I have 6 years no claims and live in a good area, but getting ridiculous annual prices of £2700+

I have tried all of the recommended ones but haven't had any luck.

I'm currently with Admiral and I can stick with them and under the modifications select it as 'Converted Camper Van' but I believe that Admiral will only pay out the market value of the van at the time of a claim and they wont pay out for of the conversation that's been done like these specialist insurers like 'justkampers' who give you an agreed payout value

Surely I cant be the only under 25 wanting to properly insure a converted van..

you might need to be added on as a named driver on another policy? ( possibly parents )

until you are 25+ anyway.

under 25`s normally have a higher risk factor - hence the 2.7k quote.

im no insurance specialist . . . but giving a 23yr old a £50k T6 would have me worried if i was asked to insure it. . . assuming a total loss.

(not that im implying that you are high risk or bad driver)

so what was the agreed value you was asking for?

Agreed value was around 27-30k, just based off what I'm paying for the van and what I believe it would cost to get the base van + the entire conversion if starting from scratch.

Currently own a 500bhp+ bmw and companies will happily insure me on that but wont with a 102bhp converted camper o_O

so why wont your existing company insure you on the T6?

either as an additional vehicle on the policy or as a separate new policy?

(assuming its due to the classing the T6 as a commercial vehicle?)

They will, but yeah they will class it as just a standard T6 and say that because its an aftermarket conversion that they wont pay out for it.

So if it did come to it and I needed to make a claim they would only pay out what the rate of the base van is at the time of the claim...

Means I would probably get half if that of the amount back...

Unlike A-Plan and Just Kampers who give you a set guaranteed agreed value.

have you tried adrian flux

I've got a T6 kombi and my 24yr old has been insured on it for the last 2 yrs as a named driver. Last yr was £300 extra on top of mine and the wife and the value i gave was 25k. Doable but may be better as a named driver and put it through your parents name.

If you do go down the route of being a named driver on another policy things to watch out for:
  • Insurance companies can be funny if the principle driver is not the DVLA registered keeper - especially if the DVLA registered keeper is a named driver
  • If you are a named driver you will need to be able to provide reasonable proof that the principle driver drives the vehicle the majority of the time.
Be very careful you don't fall into a region where you are having your parents front your insurance - it will do untold damage to both of your future insurance costs. With rising costs insurers are digging much deeper, should the worst happen you don't want to have your insurance being declared void.

Even 5 years ago I had difficulty insuring the XC70 with MrsRT as the main driver because I was a named driver. Even though that must be a very common thing as cars move around between a couple but we had to formally send off the V5 and move it from me to her to get insurance.

A good way of keeping quotes down in general is sharing vehicles - myself and my father have been named drivers on each policies for years. It's handy when giving a lift or a car is off the road as well.
