Using space in pop top if you dont need a bed

So we are planning our mk2 conversion in a LWB van this time and as kids no longer sleep upstairs we really have no need for the roof bed. It made me wonder, is it possible the space could be used to increase the internal ceiling height instead, or would that affect structural integrity of the roof? Alternatively, has anyone had bright ideas about how to use the space inventively for other purposes - storage etc?

@borat I have no bed board but made 2 folding shelves 1 that sits at the back where the bed board would sit as a shelf for our bags and one at the front for various bits and has a detachable tv bracket on it on the underside behind the drivers seat
Plus carpeted them to match the rest of the van

Interesting. Do you find it gets colder though without the bed board? We usually have ours down when it’s cold as seems to keep the heat in better. Do you have any pics?

Cheers

Before I fitted my bifold bed I had a generous headroom for a week. I’ve even thought maybe once the kids have flown the nest I would take it out for more headroom. On the other hand, I store my mattress topper up there now.

It’s not structural.
