Waste pipe from a sink - in or out?

Hi all, I've been to see a conversion company and they suggest it's best to run the waste pipe from the sink through the floor and put a container under the van to catch it.

Is that normal? I'm concerned about the extra road noise from the hole and letting cold air in.

Where does your waste pipe run to?

Thanks in advance.

Mine runs through the floor and out - on the very few occasions that we have used the sink / tap when we first got the van, we put a collapsible bucket under the exit hole. I suspect you're over thinking the stuff about additional noise coming through the plug hole. That said, we decided a long time ago that the sink was more useful as a storage space (as, indeed, was the space occupied but the water container). If I was buying / commissioning / building a new camper conversion tomorrow there would have to be a debate about whether or not to bother with a sink at all. Just my personal view - others will obviously disagree.

Mine goes through the floor too. I don’t notice any noise from it and haven’t had any issues with bugs coming up through it. The vans are so airtight I think it’s probably a bonus having that small opening.

Mine goes through the floor but there is a fitting on the end with a door that can be closed. We don’t regularly use our sink but leave the flap open anyway.

If you have gas you also need drip vents in the floor too so by the bottle and at connections never noticed any noise from any of these

Thanks very much for replying, reassuring to hear that it is normal.

And @Ayjay, we're the same - was originally not going for the hob/sink but now we've decided we are, although we're not having the conversion done until mid-June so it may change before then!

Mine goes through the floor into a collapsible bowl. Plug in out, who cares? There’s a glass lid that’s down anyway.
If my van was so quiet that I could tell the difference between the plug in our out in a sink under a glass cover then I’d be more than happy.

Mine’s a Bodan’s installation and runs outside through an existing hole in the floor.

Sink? Ours is a bread bin. But it is a functioning sink, waste pipe onto the ground (I mean a collapsible bowl obviously) we never use it, the germs and smells from emptying tuna brine and toothpaste spit would be dreadful. Any new van we spec won't have a sink, hotty boily tap, yes! Noise from the drain, nah... letting the cold in? Put a loaf over the drain!

Mine goes through the front of the wheel arch - we have very little waste water - mainly a squeezed out tea bag or rinsed dish cloth - so we don’t bother with a bucket and, when we camp, the tain soon washes away the waste!
Large electrical cable gland allows for easy removal of sink unit for mods. Blue connectors for fridge and water pump.

Nice and neat - my big concern is that you've used Powercon input terminals for what I assume are 12v connections.

Those should only be used for 240v input connections.

The safer way to do that is to use the 2 core Speakon series.

Anyone seeing those in the future will assume they are part of your 240v system (as they are if you fit Clayton units) and may put 240v into the 12v leisure system.

Worst case with Speakon is they assume it's a rear speaker feed and 12v DC across a speaker isn't great but isn't going to get sparky quickly.

Be really really careful using industry standard sockets for something different...

I was thinking more that the water could come off the wheel and through the waste outlet. All looks neat though

Once the pipe is in it’s sealed!
When I first put it in I drove and wondered what the new noise from the back was!
On the way home I stuffed the hole with tissue and it was quiet again so I think Simon’s nose thoughts are legitimate but I’ve not noticed it since everything is fitted.
Thinking about it, we store the kettle in the sink sat on a tea towel so no noise through the plug hole!

I ran my waste tubing through the existing holes -

Could you tell, or show, which existing hole you have used?

There’s a rubber bung in the cill. I shone a torch through, and poked some wire up, and it eventually comes out in a void space. A helper is useful, so you can have one outside and one inside the van. This was as I was doing the job - the black waste pipe and a cable for the level sensor are already through the bung.
