Looking for advice on a small (500L) garden pond.
I’m wanting to help mother-in-law with her garden pond so I’m looking for a 12 V water pump like this

Goyong DC 12V Brushless Submersible Water Pump 800L/H 5M for Fountain Pool Solar Circulation System Water Circulation System(Adjustable Speed)
Check this out at Amazon

that will run off a 50w? Solar panel

so I can feed it through a home made filtration box and return the water to the pond via small waterfall feature… which will then give oxygen to the pond.

Being solar powered the pump would need to run for long periods when the Sun is shining.

Are these compatible and what else would I need? Not bothered about having a battery. Just want it to run when the Sun is shining.

Grateful for any help.

Your link to the pump didn't work, but i think i found it on Amazon...it says it it needs 15W so the solar panel you show looks to be able to generate more power than the pump will need.

Some further info to consider though, the solar panel isn't going to give a smooth 12V output. looking at the advert, it will be anything up to about 22V.

Personally id add a small battery (something like a 7AH 12V sealed lead acid which are super common to alarms and UPS and as such dirt cheap - about a tenner) and a cheap solar charge controller with a timer (also about a tenner).

The timer on the controller will control turn the pump on and off as you desire, on sunny days the battery will be well charged and on days where there is no sun the pump will still work as it can use the reserves in the battery. In the event of no sun for many days the controller will prevent the battery from becoming damaged by running flat by turning off the output to the pump.

It sounds like an interesting project!

good luck.

Cheers for that. I assumed a high wattage panel would be better for the half sunny days where it wouldn’t produce the full 50W.

I’ll check out those small batteries and cheap controllers. Didn’t know some came with timers.

Just be selective on the controller for one with a load output that can be controlled with an adjustable timer. Some imply they had a 'timer' mode, but work more of a dawn till dusk type (for low voltage lighting which will be on at night).

Filtration box sounds all important but it’s just polyester wadding shoved into a submerged plant pot with a water pump on the other side of it so the wadding catches the crud. It will be quick and easy to replace the wadding.
