What to do with my 2500 litre heating oil tank?

Hi all,

This forum has been brilliant for a number of things T6 related, but also non T6 related at times, so I’m wondering if someone might want this? I’m not putting it in the for sale section because I’m not sure how to advertise it.

I have a 2500 litre Deso heating oil tank that I don’t need anymore because I’ve swapped to gas. It has some oil in there, hard to tell how much but it could be as much as 500 litres. I need to get rid of it to make use of the space it’s taking up, but it costs a fortune to get rid of the oil. No suppliers will take it, it has to be treated as contaminated and disposed of accordingly which is prohibitively expensive.

I guess I’m wondering really if anyone needs a heating oil tank with a fair bit of good oil and has the means by which to collect this and take it away?

The tank alone is about £750 new, so I would want some sort of compensation, but nothing like that amount because it’ll be doing me a favour to get rid of it.

Does anybody want it? Can anybody help?

Here’s a photo of the actual tank and a link to the manufacturers website for more info.

Decant into 20 litre containers and sell them on two Facebook ads, one as Kerosene and another as heating oil (you'll be surprised at how many people think they are completely different things) - no one will normally be able to collect, empty and transport that. I eventually sold my 1250 tank for £40 on ebay. It took a long time and negative feedback was left because the cretin thought it older than it was. I even told him when he arrived that he could leave it if he wanted.

I paid 19p for my last lot of heating oil after the initial panic was over when prices hit 45p in march due to covid
I'd love a big tank like that as I would of filled it to the brim at that price

Shame it wasn't double skinned or bunded? As you have to have them if positioned near a house I do believe

I replaced my 2500litre tank a couple of years ago, a local farmer was happy to take the old one. Dunno what he did with it. I’ve just filled up with 1700 litres at 21p/litre.

The Oftec website doesn't mention bunding being required for heating oil tanks as long as they are below 3500 litres capacity. Here's an extract from another website with up to date information. Always more to it than just a quick copy and paste from a website, but this seems to show that it doesn't need to be bunded.

Environmental protection & bunded tanks
It is true that oil spills from domestic tanks are rare, however, they are both damaging and expensive to clean up. It’s best to reduce risk in the first instance. The bunded oil tank regulations illustrate cases where you will be required to install and use a bunded oil tank to provide additional protection.

You will need a bunded tank if you answer yes to ANY of the following.

Is your oil storage tank located in a place where
  • Oil spills could run into a drain or manhole cover?
  • The tank vents can’t be seen by the delivery person because the tanks are too far away from where the tanker can park?
  • It’s within 10 metres of lakes or streams (any inland fresh water or coastline)?
  • It’s within 50 metres of a potable (drinkable) water source, like a spring, borehole or well?
  • Oil spills could run over hard ground until it reaches potable water sources, fresh inland water or coastlines?
You’ll also need a bund if your tank can hold more than 3,500 litres of oil in England or if it can hold over 2,500 litres in Scotland.

Might be worth a shout, I'll make a call later and see if my local farmer wants it. Part of me wishes I was still using oil with the prices as they are now!

Farmers often put a similar tank on a farm trailer and use it to take diesel to the combine in harvest, it's easier to take the fuel to the combine than to take the combine back to the farm. A combine or large tractor might use up to 1000 litres of fuel a day, it's not a job for a jerry can!
Years ago when I drove a combine my father would refuel my machine in this way as I combined, at a steady 4 kph, he wouldn't let me stop!
