Why are there so many Non-Runners for sale?

I’m new to Transporters, although my parents have always had them, T1-6, and I’m looking to purchase one of my own (hopefully next Saturday).

In my search for T6’s, quite a few come up listed as non-runners, and seemingly not necessarily at high mileage. It’s sort of understandable at 250,000miles, but at 80k it’s concerning to me.

I wonder why this is happening, obviously I will try to buy the best van I can, but is this owing to lack of maintenance, design/manufacture faults with the engines themselves or something else entirely?

For context: the van I’m looking to buy will likely be around the 130k miles mark.

Don’t forget to check out the for sale section on here for some cracking vans ;)

Thanks, yes I have been. I will certainly keep my eyes peeled for parts in there too!

I think the nature of what I want to build, and the budget I’m working with means I’m more than likely starting with an ex-fleet van. I only really want a panel van with nothing done to it, just stamps in the service book.

I think I’ve found the van I want, I was just wondering why there’s so many dead ones for sale!

I know a T5, but mechanically very very similar:

Perhaps because people don't want to keep a van that doesn't run?

Looking at the ads it seems owners of plenty of examples of other makes of van also want to get shot of them when the engine breaks, some also at startlingly low mileage. It doesn't seem a problem unique to the Transporter family.
