Winter Wheels and Tyre combos... What have you?

Hello Chaps
I'm new to the forum, so please excuse the obvious... but having searched and read through the many threads I can't find a definitive answer. I'm running a 2017 T6 T30 campervan conversion, lowered 40mm on 20" wheels and interested in knowing what winter wheel and tyre combo members have/running in the UK. Seems there is lots of choice of 16-18" wheels but few 19" and hardly any 20"s.

1. Who runs 20" winter tyres on a lowered van? and what tyres?
2. Who runs 20" wheels on a lowered van then switches to smaller wheel size and winter tyres and what wheel and tyre combo works best??

My thoughts are
a) Switch to a similar size 20" winter tyre 103 load rating..Tyres limited to choice but won't give additional ground clearance...
b) Acquire a set of smaller wheels with winter tyres fitted, but not sure what size/spec to go for as they must bolt straight on and must look reasonable and not silly given my vans lowered...

Having spare winter wheels is, if you have the storage room, easier to manage than changing tyres twice a year.

Regarding size, you may find your rolling radius is nigh on the same as running 18’s, meaning ground clearance will remain the same (excluding the width of your 20’s)

Thanks, I'll look in to this and see what's available, may end up buying a set of 18"'s on ebay and reshodding with new rubber.

Came from a 2019 T6 VW Transporter.
2 tyres just legal, 2 have more life left in them.
Nokian winter tyres.

I kept the OEM Devonports, had them powder coated satin black and fitted with Goodyear Ultragrip winter tyres. They were just swapped on last week as I am driving to Munich on Thursday for the first trip this season.

Aye I’ve been all through the wheel/tyres dilemma since buying my van last year. She’s a T32 so - adhering to load ratings - I need a 103 which really limits choice. You don’t btw: yours is a T30 you said is you can use 101 and above. Which at least opens up the option of sticking to 20” and using 255/40/R20s (101 load rating ) which has a reasonable choice of winters…

…that said if you’re going to run an ADDITIONAL set of winter wheels then the usual approach is to go for a steel wheel in a 17” or 18” (something like the black JBW steels). And the latter gives the really good 235/55/R18 option which has tonnes of choice for winters.

And having said all that I think my likely approach is going to abandoning my lovely 20” wheels and just getting some new nice 18” wheels and running all-season tyres! I’m in Scotland and even here we really don’t get that much actual snow (unless perhaps you live inland in the NE) and the mud and snow (M+S) grip of A/S tyres is useful anyway in summer (wet grass etc!).

I think the better reason to run winters is more for the wheels and eg protecting polished alloys - rather than any huge need for actual winter tyres.
I see you look like you live in N Yorkshire so, a bit like NE Scotland, you might actually genuinely need a bit of snow capability in the dales…?

Thanks for the info, appreciated... I was under the impression I need 103's, so a 101 load rating does open it up for tyre choice. The van currently sits on 20x 8.5's 245x45s 103s on front and 20x9.5" 275x40s on 106's at the back and sits/looks/handles well. I'll look at 101's and see what's available.

Having specc'd my build on staggered 20"s with decent rubber only 6k miles ago, I'll be keeping them. Shame I've winter sets of 19"s and 20"s from previous cars but neither right for the van for different reasons, so they'll be going on ebay to part fund the new rubber.

Your'e quite right, living in North Yorks we do get snow every year + we winter camp with annual trips into the Highlands and Isles between Christmas and Easter, so a decent set of winters is needed...

Sorry but I wouldn’t say she is sitting well based on your original photo. Although it’s probably a suspension issue rather than anything to do with wheels and tyres.
Your van looks to have the common campervan rear sag - which at worst can be dangerous due to incorrectly weighted front vs rear for braking.
Probably due to lowering springs not handling the weight.
I had the same issue albeit perhaps not as bad…

I used to run 20" winters as I got a very cheap set of Range Rover wheels with new 275/40 Pirelli. They were a bit oversized on a lowered Shuttle but given they we £200 I used them for 3 winters before selling. Currently I run 17" Cascavelle with Good Year winters but looking to change over to 20" with winters as I found a set of wheels matching my summers. Not many people running 20" BBS split rims in the winter but I'll give it a go.
