Winter Wheels & Tyres

I currently have Ultra Arz4 tyres 255/45Z R18 103W with Wolfrace Alloys (1 of which I cracked a few months ago after finding a pothole and 1 is scratched from parking along a kerb). I'm needing to replace the tyres due to being worn and now I'm considering a set of winter wheels and tyres and switching over to a summer set. We live in north Wales so the weather especially right now has been extremely snowy. We regularly travel to Scotland and will be travelling across Europe.

The t6.1 highline panel van is a '22 plate, converted into a Campervan and has not been lowered. The suspension was updated a few months ago after posting for advice on here due to the sagging at the back.

I wish I had kept the original vw 16" tyres. I've read about all terrain tyres, but this Campervan is also my day van for commuting to work.

Can you advise the best, most robust tyre and wheel, so it limits the likelihood of cracking an alloy, provides excellent traction on wet or snowy roads and fields. And then where to get these supplied/fitted?

Separately, I also need advice on fixing options for a pair of Maxtrax...

Yours is a pretty typical use case for a camper and most people would probably recommend an all-season tyre. Tyres like the michelin cross climate or goodyear vector are frequently recommended.

All season tyres would be best for the majority of people. Michelin Cross Climate are amongst or are the best of them, though challengers exist and can exceed in some car sizes. The Michelin cross climate even rivals some pure winter tyres in some wintery conditions, snow and ice. They are very good tyres all year around and are available in a multitude of rim sizes. You can keep them as your one and only tyre. They are very popular on this forum, of coarse some people have other favourites.

I live off road in Wales and have several stets of rims. One set has BFG 255/55R18XLKO2 AT tyres another set still has the standard tyres that it came with. I may change these for Michelin Cross Climate or something similar when the time comes. This year I kept the BFG on all year because it was so very wet.. I also have a set of overused winter tyres. I doubt that I shall buy pure winter again though if I lived in the Highlands of Scotland I might but All Season Tyres have come so far and are getting better each year their would need to be very strong reasons not to use them.. For my Caravelle I prefer 18 inch rims though 17 inch will fit because I like a bit more space between rim and disc. This mainly to allow twigs to fall out. Some prefer more rubber wall, so may have chosen 16 inch if it would fit. there may well be a large disparity of choice and reason.
