You've been lucky - it's not uncommon for a failed aux belt to get tangled around the cambelt and cause catastrophic engine damage.

Cam belt and water pump was just over £400 in 2020.

Your mate is correct - cambelt needs doing recently!

VW Vans Chelmsford just quoted me £789 for cambelt and waterpump. Got a price from my local VW specialist, using OEM parts, inc belt, pump and aux belt for £550. Should be booked in at start of June :thumbsup: Van registered 22/05/2019 and done 28k.

I think the genuine one is less than £100 so not a huge saving, i went with genuine pump with cambelt change
