I followed the general advice above. The oil change had been done and the van driven 315miles before I fitted the EGR blanking and the Tafmet. I've now done 897 miles since the oil change and EGR blanking so I took a sample today and sent it off to Millers for analysis. They ask you to fill the...
...engine specialist , but it certainly makes sense to me. I can only assume some companies that blank the egr via software means the dpf won't regen because it won't see the egr valve closed. But could be wrong. The tafmet I fitted has so far had no adverse effects on performance or dpf...
I think it might be best to install the Tafmet kit and carry out an oil change straight away rather than waiting 1000 miles, fairly obvious there’s an issue and every mile driven could result in more damage.
If there is a high level of contamination you won’t clear it all with a single oil...
...The whole purpose of the EGR is to lower the combustion temperature after the engine has reached operating temperature in order to reduce the NOX emissions.
It doesn’t make sense.
There are vans that have tens of thousands of miles with a Tafmet emulator installed without any DPF issues.
...were "Wear metal analysis reveals high Aluminium, consistent with the well known EGR cooler corrosion issue sometimes seen with VW 2.0 L BiTDI 180 hpCFCA engines. Soot is at a 'caution' level, likely also EGR related." Best get an oil change and look at blanking off and Tafmet solution soon.
Thanks, I bought mind like yourself unaware of the potential issue. Mine had 26k with rev d, i blanked and fitted a Tafmet at 28k and hoping I have avoided issues. Hope you get sorted with a new engine or refund. So far I have no oil consumption and it pulls well fingers crossed.
PS everything...
...and stripped down. Also not sure that the dye would be present after the exhaust gas burns it off.
If you blank the EGR the coolant can’t be lost through the engine, this would have to be a temporary measure as would register a low flow rate unless you fit a Tafmet emulator at the same time.
you have to make sure the dpf is functioning correctly before you worry about the oil consumption. Known issue (and my van was doing this) is dpf is blocked and the unspent fuel was topping up the oil = no oil consumption on the dip-stick, reality is the oil is being diluted by fuel and causing...
My 180 had no oil consumption DPF issues or noticeable power reduction till it failed but driving it with the rebuilt engine I realized how much power it had lost with the worn-out cylinders it was a different animal and doing many more miles to the gallon as well
...to the MOT test but hopefully an ordinary test station is not going to notice for care too much. It's not an obvious change on the outside especially if you get it mapped rather than using the Tafmet emulator.
The garage will always tell you its your risk if you defeat the emissions systems.
...My advice would be not to touch a van with a RevC EGR.
If you find one with a RevD EGR get an oil sample done, the issue you have there is that you have the current owners word for when it had it’s last oil change.
There is a FB group that covers this issue.
Have a Search on 180 ps or tafmet
I'd agree but the van got an oil service yesterday. Wish I had taken the sample before then. I'll have to do a bit of mileage and then take a sample.
Forgot to say that I have been checking oil all year and never used any. Then I happened to check the oil last week when I was getting the van...
