First up if you have a LB installed, you need to figure where the 12v sockets are actually powered from.
Starter or leisure battery.
(Pictures too - we love pictures!)
Ideally fuse it by the charger slightly lower than the fuse at the starterbattery end. The OE setup uses 100A at the starterbattery end and 80A at leisure battery end.
This way of the worst happens it should be the easy to reach fuse by the leisure battery that goes first, rather than the one...
...it was the original battery then it may just be age, AGM batteries don't last much more than 5-6 years. Generally, with no driving, a starterbattery will last 2 weeks before needing a top up charge.
Presumably we're talking about the starterbattery, not leisure battery?
As above, take a...
...a straight swap, just cutting plugs off and joining, but there is an extra wire (white) which I believe is something to do with the starterbattery. I think the CBE charges the starter once the leisure battery is full.
I don't think the IP65 can switch between battery profiles so I won't be...
All of the "car" electronics that work off of the ignition work from the starterbattery.
It's not a good idea to use these systems without the engine running. In most straightforward leisure systems nothing will charger the starter while on EHU - so all the usage of the normal courtesy lights...
But if the van can start (ie not dead starterbattery) then why does the inverter not work if its wired to the starterbattery?
@Alexryc. You're probably not too far from me (Jnc23 M6) and would be happy to take a look if you want to drive over sometime.
I've just checked again, the starterbattery light is no longer flashing either plugged in or not.
My only concern now is that the white wire also acts as a switch for the main 12v distribution board to use mains rather than battery, and that with this not being connected I might always be on...
yes,
looking back to the original sketch here : Dellmassive`s Camper Van Adventure
ill have a quick disconnect on the starterbattery , and the leisure battery.
so ill be able to connect to either just by plugging it in.
i have a few Victron IP22 & IP65 chargers that i can use,
but...
Another vote for the Ablemail. I fitted one when I did a leisure battery upgrade and it is brilliant. Fit and forget. Has kept my ailing starterbattery running fine. It is really simple to fit, just 3 wires, so definitely worth looking to do yourself.
...THQ)
This is only for some LED lighting and some USB charger points.
I would be grateful to hear what exactly I need to run this.
Wanting to be able to use power but not drain the starterbattery.
Finished van will be a Day van set up, carpet lined with a rock n roll style bed.
Thanks
James
Update on this...
Starter motor eventually gave way after it cranked for ages one morning.
Local garage changed the starter motor (used a lucas OEM one) and its now starting much quicker BUT it still does have a 2-3 second crank if left for a while, nothing like the 15-20 seconds it was...
Problem is now after disconnecting leisure battery from vehicle chassis and only to shunt B-, is that the starterbattery ALT+ is only showing +8v. The only way to get a charge from the ALT+ is to connect the B- on the shunt to chassis.
Further update to this.....
I was away in the van over the weekend hooked up. All okay other than the starterbattery symbol started flashing again. The panel reading on the starterbattery was 12.0v this dropped to 11.9 as we were about to set off home. The van started okay however.
I got one...
