My van is in VW Croydon today with low flow EGR issues, they have told me the doubt VW would authorised a replacement EGR under the all in plan for a van over 4 years old so don’t take it as read that the warranty covers the EGR, it seems it depends on the dealer, how hard they push for...

Official VW manual is pretty clear about this - change the bolts/gaskets during every refit. They state the mandatory replacements at the beginning of every chapter. There is clearly a reason for that (although in some places - an overkill).

I replaced the egr inlet pipe yesterday as I had suspected this, but on removal it was fairy straight, no pitting or splits etc…. I went to Vw and got a new one anyway, along with new gaskets and spline bolts…. I should also have done the egr outlet pipe , as I know one end of it has a rubber...

The EGR blanking plates could be placed at either end of the EGR pipes but it you want the best protection against a split pipe they should be placed so that the pipes are isolated along with the EGR unit.

Dpf left in situ, though if I’m honest that will get deleted if it gives up the ghost. Primarily left in place due to obvious MOT concerns New EGR June 23, coded out but not plated out.

...insufficient flow error came up a few weeks ago. cleared with CArista, and did not come back. May have gone on for another few thousand miles, but as the van is a keeper, did not want it causing any more related issues. edit: the egr pipe cracked and was replaced on a service a year or two ago.

If you can smell exhaust gases under the bonnet or in the van there’s a problem. The cracked EGR pipes on certain engines is well documented in the Forum, have a Search with ‘EGR pipe’

That seems a bit odd, the rear EGR pipe (feed to EGR) connects on the far left side of the exhaust manifold and is nowhere near either turbocharger?

Suspension / wobbly drive would be my guess as well. But check for split egr pipe although most report exhaust smell in the cab. Heated windscreen was a pretty good guess as well, I don’t have one so don’t know how visible the grid is.

when you had the AB deleted, what did they do with the DPF? - open up and turn into through pipe? and have you still got a working EGR?

After having the rear EGR pipe replaced a few weeks ago everything had been fine. Van started & completed a regen earlier today, I had Carista plugged in and the P0401 message returned but showed as Pending. No engine warning light though…not sure why? As in is it normal to show on Carista...

It’s just mapped out and left in place. The blanking plates stop any exhaust gases leaking past the egr valve. The coolant still passes through. For MOT purposes it looks factory. Mine has passed a couple of MOTs since we put it to sleep.

How do you identify a crack in the EGR pipe? Can you hear it, smell it, see it?

I raised the health and safety issue direct with VW (0800 333666) and got nowhere with making the point that VW have clearly recognized the egr design fault because the replacement pipe is far sturdier. It seems that breathing in carbon monoxide etc because of the faulty original pipe is not...
