If it only happens in 5th, and the whine pitch is exactly proportional to road speed, then it'll be a gearbox bearing. If the whine pitch is proportional to engine load, not road speed, it may be the turbo, or a blown gasket. But you would expect a turbo fault to present itself in any gear, not...

Can hear a click and whine under the bonnet when trying to start. Shame I haven't got a hammer to give the starter motor a knock. Parked on a hill so can't safely bump and try turning the starter motor

This happens to mine but only on acceleration in first or second gear first thing when I drive it..a slight whine...after 5-10 mins it disappears.. presumably after the engine has warmed up..I'm not overly concerned.
