Apart from looks, are there any additional benefits from upgrading to 18 inchers, does it affect the comfort of handling?

comfort: Yes - the overall wheel circumference often stays the same, so you then end up with slimmer tyre walls.
handling: 18” wheels are often a little wider, so you could argue the van is then more planted.
