1st mot & failure

I took our Kombi for its 1st mot and service today at the van centre in Stoke on Trent anyway it failed the mot as the rear nearside tyre was down to 1.5mm and the rest of the tyres had between 3.5 and 4.5 mm of tread, the van has only done 8800 miles.
I have been to our local tyre place and they said that the rear nearside wears the most because of going around roundabouts he also said that you don’t get a great mileage because having 20” wheels fitted they are not commercial tyres but car tyres.
Anyway they’ve ordered me a tyre and will fit it today about 4 pm and I’m booked in for mot tomorrow.

The "car tyre" line is not correct. Your tyres are most probably rated for SUVs, so if they are good enough to support a 2.5 to 3.0 tonne Range Rover, they'll support your van.

As others have said, get a Hunter alignment done, although this is best done with 4 new tyres so that everything can be set up all level and square to begin with.

Sounds more like an an alignment issue - never heard of the roundabout wear problem?
Tyres are one of the most common reasons for an MOT failure. Always check tyres on a regular basis for uneven wear and damage. Check pressures on a regular basis. Don’t present a vehicle for MOT without first checking tyres.

Roundabout tyre wear is very prevalent in nearby MK, land of the high speed roundabouts, but its usually the NSF that cops then worst of it as that carries the highest loads on a right-hander.

As the chaps above state, get your geometry checked and keep a close eye on your pressures. Don't pay to much credence to that which tyre fitters say as their only expertise is in fitting tyres, nothing more. If they were any cleverer they wouldnt be tyre fitters in the first place.

Handy tip - quality accident repair specialists usually have the best alignment gear and are far more expert in vehicle geometry that Fred in a Shed selling tyres, so its worth seeking one out.

Just changed my 20" tyres after around 32k miles. A good alignment and rotating the wheels goes a long way!

For my ten penny worth I have never had a NSF wear out of proportion to the OSF. I guess not enough roundabouts near me or lack of geometry checks by most people.
On a different note we have just won our race at Circuito de Navarra last race of the season
