Are all main dealers full of S*!T?

For 2 years my vw dealer said my rear discs need changing very soon. Last year I asked about them as it would of been 3 years since I was first informed. The service manager said they were fine, just a bit rusty. I should note that the service manager was new, so I think its luck of the draw whether you get someone sensible

I had similar experiences with VW. My conclusion was that the warranty wasn't worth the paper it was written on and I would never buy a new VW product again. I'll be going to Toyota for my cars now after 30 odd years of VW's.

Mat
And there's the rub, I had a Toyota Hilux, never again. The main dealer service was shocking & the vehicle bled me dry, the most expensive to run truck I've ever owned. I'll never buy another Toyota.

Unfortunately it's now rife in any area of engineering.

Partially it's our own fault as consumers as it's the natural outcome of looking for something we need at a decent quality but then finding what looks like the same cheaper on Amazon/Ali Express.

It's a one way competition with only one outcome, a slew of cheap as possible parts and an easy bit to chop out is the testing and quality control and just have a "warranty"

It's getting harder and harder to source reliable quality electronics and electrical components even if you're willing to pay the money you just end of paying more for the same cost engineered part.
Exactly, there's a philosophy in all areas of business that basically says, provide the lowest level of service/product & we'll deal with the aftermath. Our daughter has just moved into a brand new build, just shy of £750k. She asked me to help her with the snagging. The snagging list was over 250 items long, we had to put it on a spreadsheet to manage it. I'm not talking about minor items either, some were major plumbing/electrical/construction faults. It's taken nearly 6 months to get things resolved. I didn't know at the time, but there are professional snagging companies out there who will come in & snag your property for a fee & chase up the builders on your behalf. I don't blame the suppliers, it's us, the great un-washed. The majority of people these days have no idea of what is right or wrong, as long as they get a good insta pic. Take vans for example, how many new people arrive here on the forum, having parted with large amounts of cash, only to find they've bought a POS? But they bought it because it looked the part & they couldn't wait to spend their money.
I'll get me coat.

Yep, that’s all my fathers neighbour does, he also built an enormous extension on his house using materials requisitioned to do the snagging. All paid for by the house owners! It’s a circus.

Oh that's good news. Will report back.
So - reporting back from VW Newbridge:

I did the online check-in so was a bit surprised when I got to reception to be told to sit and wait for somebody ot see me. I didn't have time so just dumped the keys and told the receptionist that I was sure they would know what to do.

Got a very helpful call from them later in the day just to check exactly what was to be done. I authorised a change of brake fluid (not covered by the all-in scheme) at £69.

Another phone call today - van passed the MOT no advisories. Tyres were wearing a bit unevenly and they suggested I take it to a specialist to check the alignment before buying new tyres, but that the existing tyres had many miles left on them.

They are checking that the squeaky tensioner pulley is under warranty - sounded like it will be - and that I could either leave the van while they get parts or bring the van back later. Opted to bring it back later as I want it this weekend.

So no extras, nothing out of warranty, experience so far all good.

This is good news, glad it seems to confirm my experience of this garage that they do seem to make the warranty pay, and suggest other non oem work is carried out elsewhere at a reasonable price.

Picked up the van yesterday. No extra costs other than the brake fluid change I had agreed to. Just waiting for confirmation that the squeaky pulley is under warranty ( the dealer thinks it will be).

So top marks for VW Newbridge, Edinburgh.

Glad this worked out for you. My experience with the same crowd a year ago was exceedingly poor.

Not just the dealers , quick fit used to regularly pull this stunt .
Go in for a puncture repair but "sorry sir, it's gonna need a tyre" .
then when they have the wheels off " sorry to report your discs and pads are in a very bad way and it wouldnt be safe to put you back on the road like it is"
So sting the customer for a pair of tyres , new discs and pads.
On inspection they'd fitted one of the pads backwards and left the springs off !! Yeah its apparently ok to put you back on the road like that .
They (quick fit) once told my dad his Audi Q3 would need all 4 tyres replacing so not to upset the quattro 4 wheel drive system... god only knows how it will cope with the uneven tyre wear that did, and will happen again!!!

There is some element of truth in this as some AWD/4WD systems can lock up or put heavy stress on the mid clutch if the rotational rate is not the same front and back (same reason you have a differential left and right) and some traction control systems can be wrong footed and needlessly engage the mid clutch because the difference is seen as wheelslip.

The usual way of dealing with that is to rotate the tyres to keep the wear even - the issue comes if you get a puncture on one tyre when the others are reasonably worn.

I believe the Audi uses the same Haldex system as my XC70 (and the 4Motion) and there you need to keep rolling radius within 2% tolerance with a preference for the larger radius on the front. I currently get TCS/ABS warnings on the XC70 as my front left is a lot more worn due to reasons - just a 250k I'm holding off replacing as plenty of other things could fail beyond economic repairs at that age.
