20” Tyre sizes.... 245/45/20 or 265/40/20

I'm not talking about whether they fit or not.
It's about matching circumference and the tolerances, especially if it's a 4motion.

Apologies jumping on this but I can't figure out how I'm able to post my own thread!

I've just opted for some 20" by 8.5j wheels. Originally wanted staggered but they're not available until the end of March and these came up at a decent deal so pulled the trigger.

I've read that a lot of you suggest going for 275/35/20 tyres and I believe that these will give the right profile look and match a s close to the original diameter. However, I've read and have heard from some van mods suppliers that they opt for 275/40 profile as they provide more protection and a better ride (which is what I also want). So, here are my options:

275/35/20

245/40/20 (only can find one brand which is Nankang and is load rated to 103)

265/40/20

Could you tell us what your preference is and why and if not too much trouble, could you post a picture of one of your wheels so we're able to see how they look?

Thanks in advance and to the OP as I've jumped on this

I’ve taken the standard Devonports off and put on 265/40 R20s. What will the the speedo error be? I saw once a calculator tool but can’t find it. Driving to Cornwall soon and don’t want to get caught out.

Ok, so I know this has been done to death and I've searched every thread on this.

But, I'm changing tyres and need to decide between 245/45/20 and 265/40/20 (I currently have this all round). I'm going to 275/40/20 on the rear as I don't have enough cover on the wheel (10 inch wide). But the fronts are causing the confusion, they are 8.5inch wide and like the idea of a thinner tyre and better comfort but I'm worried I won't have enough cover on the wheel to stop curb rash (It's my wife's daily drive and school run car!). I'm also worried about going up in diameter putting more stress on components. Wheels are Velare 08s staggered 8.5/10inch

I guess my basic question is what puts more stress on components, the diameter or width??

Thanks

James

The diameter will affect the gearing. The width wont.

Thanks for the replies guys

I think I'm going to go to 275/40/20 at the rear and stick with the 265/40/20 at the front as much as I like the idea of a thinner tyre, I don't want to increase the radius anymore than it is on the driven wheels as don't want to risk lack of rim protection

Thanks

@jamob
I have Leighton LV-1 wheels the same width as yours.
I have 275/40/20 on the rear and 245/45/20 on the front.
The overhang or bulge or whatever looks the same both front and rear.
Previously with 275/40/20 on the front the wheel bulge was too big and it affected the way it handled.
Now with 245/45/20 up front it handles better and steering is easier and also it seems to set off from standstill more easily.
The overall circumference is (virtually) the same front/rear1D91633F-8E9A-443A-9D84-94036E61B6FD.jpeg7A11CB68-D9D5-4B88-8DAB-8137B56E60B3.jpeg

What load rating do those 245 45 20 front tires have , and what make are they .
i run 245 40 20 on my front wheels but battled to get sufficient load rating ,and mine is only a T28

245/45 20 is often 103 rated Steve.

Nankang do the AS-2+ in the 245/40 20 size you run now in a 103 rating too, but they also do the same tyre in a 99 rating!

My 2p worth

My van came with 275/40/20 on 9" rims and I always had a small judder changing into 2nds gear. The rolling radius is so big, doing hill starts whist towing a car on a trailer was almost impossible. I changed to 275/35/20 and the change is staggering. The judder changing into 2nd has gone and the gearing is better optimised so hill starts are ok and acceleration better.
Just shows how important it is to keep the original rolling radius is.

Hi all, just looking to replace the tyres for the first time on our VW T32. Currently have 255/35/R20 but they are not load rated. Will 265/40/R20 be ok if the van has been lowered between 40-50ml?

I'm running 255/40/20 Front and 265/40/20 Rear, no issues. The fronts are nice and close to original diameter. 275/40 are huge and any /35 profiles quite harsh
and make filling the arch harder.
