Has anyone swapped/converted a CAAB engine for the stronger more reliable pd 130/150 engines? I'd like to maybe do this.
AnyScreenshot_20230810_145620_Gallery.jpg help greatly appreciated

Your picture is a T5 - is that the vehicle you want to do the swap on ?

Fitting the engine may be the easy bit, getting the electronics to wire up and talk to each other might be the fun bit!

Is the PD engine really more reliable than the CR? Apart from the CFCA Bi-Turbo, the CR's seem very reliable, can do mega miles, and don't suffer camshaft wear and blown head gaskets like the PD does.

It seems like an enormous amount of work for (in my opinion) not much gain. Also the T5.1 is Euro 5 with a DPF, so to pass an MOT, the PD engine would need a DPF, no idea how this could be done seeing as most PD's didn't have a DPF , unless there are some late Euro 4 donor cars which were fitted with DPF's, (like the 2.5 PD was in the T5) and could be passed off as a Euro 5?

Mine isn't a CR engine it's a single turbo Caab engine. Can this be upgraded, what's involved. I guess what I'm driving at is, changing from what's already fitted and failed to something that is doable and more reliable....
Appreciate any guidance

What was the root cause failure for your engine?

Honestly don't know. Bought as non runner. It does run but the bottom end is knocking badly.
If anyone cam speak to me regards this I'd be thankful. 07429440829
Lots of people have not had any issues with this engine. Like most things it's the ones that have had issues are most vocal. It would be more economical and quicker to get the original repaired or replace with a known good one.
You should look to diagnose the reason for the failure so that you can ensure it won't cause an issue with the replacement engine.

Would a 140Hp CAAC engine from a crash damaged vehicle be a good way to go?
No adblue to worry about.

By all accounts I can use CAA CAAA CAAB CAAC as a direct replacement. From what I've been advised they're the same engine with different state of tune/turbo boost.
Or am I wrong there too lol
Anyone selling a CAAC?

All the 2.0L engines from 2010 onwards are CR (common rail), so CAAB is definitely one!
CAAA and CAAB are 2 states of tune of exactly the same engine on a 5 speed box.
CAAC is the same base engine with a bigger turbo, injectors etc on a 6 speed box.
CFCA is the same base engine with loads of differences including a Bi-Turbo - major problems with these, don't even think about it!

In my opinion, I would firstly strip your existing engine and find out what's wrong, then repair it, or replace with CAAA, CAAB or CAAC + ECU and 6 speed box etc. I'd steer well clear of a PD due to a minefield of problems as said above. Also the 1.9 PD is a pretty rough engine in a T5, the 2.0 is way more refined!

CAAB and CAAC engines differ only in software and one exhaust gas temperature sensor! (correctly noted that CAAC 6 speed manual transmission (front or all wheel drive DSG (front wheel drive), CAAB 5 speed transmission and front wheel drive only)

Bulletproof if you’ve taken the precautions for the single ancillary weakness

Thanks so much for this in depth response. Appreciate you taking the time.
There's a chap going to rebuild mine.
Interesting what you said about the higher state of tune paired with 6 speed box also.

Have a good weekend
