4motion Haldex Service

Hi, Are all 4Motion’s on the Haldex system?

just been reading about the HALDEX Service?? Which I knew nothing about, so now a bit worried as I’m not sure when/if mine has been done.
Would this be picked up on The All In Service Plan as it’s not long been in for a service.
Thanks

Mine had no record of being serviced in its first 3 years even though it had a full VW service history and I had to specifically ask VW to do it as part of the service. So you’ll probably have to ask them to do it.

Make sure whoever is doing it knows exactly what they are doing - there have been several instances of them exploding a few hundred miles after service. There have been cases reported on the forum.

VW all in service plan doesn’t include Haldex service (or DSG, air-con service etc) it’s just basic engine service.

This is on the T&Cs

Haldex should be every 3 yrs. Normally when you boo with a VW CV service dept they will offer it as the online records they have will tell them ‘it’s due’

There’s a little filter, a bit like a thimble that you want to get checked/replaced. Dealers don’t usually touch it as part of the dsg service, but it’s worth doing.

Same with my Skoda Kodiaq 4x4, not in service plan. Booked in for Haldex doing with service next month. I will ask about the filter.

I just did a haldex service for 274k km driven T6 and oh boy was the pump "filter" full of goo. I have no record of the previous service, but this was quite terrible. I think this car have been driven in slippery conditions(Finlands lappland) and the 4motion have been running a lot.

I also opened the pump housing and the electric motor had produced a lot of carbon(?)dust inside the pump(forgot to take a picture). Idea for this came around when I was reading about haldex failures in general and some Volvo oriented community had multiple haldex pump failures by burning the electric motor due to this dust.

If you have over 200k driven 4motion, I would suggest to open the pump also during service to extend its lifecycle.

I believe the Haldex and DSG services are every 40k (I do 30k a year)? My van has been in the dealer system since new and the system doesn't seem to remind them about those, yet I get reminders for the standard service.

Turns out I had missed one Haldex service, had one recently and the pump then developed a hardware fault and the 4motion stopped working with no warning lights on the dash. Took it back to check, told me the pump needed replacing which they would order, then it started working again and has done since.

Definitely keep track of it, saw one which had literally exploded the casing, don't want to know what they cost to replace..

Had Haldex done last year at Fife Autotech and they specifically mentioned cleaning the filter screen but the previous time the main dealer didn’t and as I didn’t know to ask no idea if the filter was done at that time.It seems an important thing to leave to chance.

where did you find a service kit ... including the O-rings for the pump ??

I would consider a service time interval is more of a sop to dealerships so far as services go mileage and use are a better guidance. My Haldex 2019 T6 Caravelle Executive with differential lock was serviced by an Independent VAG Specialist in wales at 27,000 miles. I was informed that it was very dirty and gluey. It will be serviced before that mileage is attained in future. It had been experiencing some problems. Mine is being used Off-Road very frequently because I live Off-Road so to get in and out to reach a public road the system is probably under more pressure than when engaged during normal driving. I usually engage the differential lock up hill one it is always important to regularly use mechanical diff locks because they are known to stick with disuse no matter what manufacturer and the other reason is that it gives a far more positive drive over slippery rocky and muddy areas. I will drive in these conditions without the diff lock but their is some small slippage which can be detected at slow speeds walking pace. I would not conciser my usage extreme because it is not being off roaded over significant distances only approximately a mile from house to road in either direction. It is driven mainly on tight welsh country roads many single track and of course on longer journeys normal carriage ways A, B and C roads rarely on Motorways. This is just to give an idea of usage. I would suggest that a lower mileage say 20,000 miles would be a better service interval and less if considerable off road or regular snow covered roads such as some parts of Europe. If someone where travelling to Iceland or some similar place for a holiday, then it may be a reasonable and prudent to have the Haldex serviced before. The same advice for longer off road pursuits in some parts of Europe as I know that this kind of pursuit or holiday is common amongst German drivers. Fortunate fellows!:D

I got my oil and o-rings from Aeromotors(based in Estonia), but I have previously ordered haldex stuff from 4x4parte also(Service kit). The 850 ml oil isn't propably going to be enough to fill the system, after the pump has been out also. I suggest to get another bottle of the oil.
