Advice on first home coffee latte machine

Seriously though, the Wife was given a Tassimo Machine, and with the Lockdown I've maxed at four lattes, before stopping before say 6pm. Been okay so far.....

Keeping the list of coffee machines expanding, in the house we use a Melitta ‘Caffeo Solo & Milk’. We feed it with our choice of beans and enjoy wonderful coffee. All the bean waste goes into the compost.

For the van we use a Nespresso ‘Essenza Mini’. It was the smallest profile machine we could find. The used pods are unfortunate but in the van environment it gives us much better control over the waste. All pods are recycled though through Nespresso. We power it from hookup or off the leisure battery through the inverter.

What inverter are you using for the Nespresso please? And does it hammer the battery to make a coffee?
Presumably it works fine on the EHU.

Our electrical installation uses NDS equipment. The inverter is their 1500W Pure Sine Wave inverter, the battery the 3Lion 100Ah Lithium with the 3Link controller. Current drawn peaks at about 130A, which is substantial but adequately supplied by the system. A Nespresso cup uses perhaps 1% of the battery.

Whilst the Lithium battery is more than capable, we know from experience that it will wreck a 100Ah Lead Acid battery. Initially one was fitted in error and it failed very quickly!

Hookup operation is of course fine.

Good to know thanks. I have a 100ah Lithium but no inverter. Not sure if I need one. Might keep it old school with the hob and AeroPress
I do have an old nespresso machine here though.

Back in the day I had a serious habit ( at least 2 litres a day, black strong no sugar ) I had access to raw beans and a roaster. I was dealing ( small time for friends ) but it took its toll ( my heart started to dance on its own ) and I had to go cold turkey. I was clean for about 5 years.
I’m now on Nespresso ( original 10+ ) but with perfect measured shots I can stay in control.
The obsession re-emerged trying to get a machine to work in the van. Various inverters and batts tried but space taken and hassle got too much. I found a battery operated machine on eb@y sorted size of a thermos flask.
It only does enough for 1 espresso a time but with a bit of hot water added, perfect breakfast Americano

We have a couple of these (bodum stainless cup & press) and generally use for ‘on the go’ drinks and dont use as a press. I seem to recall you get a small amount of fine grinds past the seal so best to decant into a second cup, especially if adding milk. We’ve taken them on holiday and they’ve been perfectly acceptable. Other bonus no additional filter papers to worry about!

In the interests of consumerism I’ll use to make my second cup of the day and report back!

Report back - coffee not quite as nice as the Bialetti (same coffee used) and fine grinds in the very last drop, however, I think perfect for simple ‘on the go’ coffee making.

we’ll probably take the camping burner with us when we go away and would prove easier than the bialetti as we normally have to boil extra water as espresso quantities of coffee IYSWIM!

Just looked at your machine as the wife wants one (and I want to stop using pods to reduce plastic waste). Looks good for £249 on Delonghi site. Can you adjust the length of the drink with this machine or does it just do espresso shots?

There are a couple of cup options as you can make 2 cups at once..to be honest we generally stick a mug under and hit 2 cups and its about right! you can stop the pour tho part way through tho. after some experimentation we don't tinker with the settings too much any more, occasionally use the steamer The appeal to this type of machine for us was its petty maintenance free..we stick beans in, keep the water topped up and empty the waste grounds hopper every now and then.

The price does seem to go up and down, i think the RRP is £299 but i think we were swayed when we found it on deal for £229..it was too much of a bargain to miss. worth sticking in pricespy.co.uk to see if there are any retailers doing any good deals.

For more info..i just found the manual online - https://www.delonghi.com/Global/InstructionManuals/GB/GB-ESAM2800.pdf

Nowpresso.

Bought it for the van, when we get it! Uses Nespresso or compatible capsules. We have a DeLonghi with milk steamer/frother for home.

The Nowpresso works off its own battery or 12v. The battery will only do 2-3 espressos from cold, and takes several minutes to do one, but you can use hot (just boiled) water which it does instantly; we have had 80+ and the battery is only just on half charge.

Edited it to say: very impressed with the company; we had an issue with it, and the retailer passed our details to Nowpresso; I had the founder/CEO on the phone within a day (from overseas!) and sorted it

Thanks to this thread I’m back using the Bialetti several times a day - it was buried in the cupboard and we were using a basic funnel/filter paper.

I even purchased some ground decaf for the afternoons so I dont get too hyper!
