Advice on fuel pump setup

Changing my cam belt following the forums instructions carefully as its the first one I've done. 2.0lt 150bhp. 2017

Have the timing covers removed and checking the setting pins (with the old belt still on) notice that the fuel pump is off what the vw service manual specified. Looking about a cog tooth too far clockwise. Not sure if the previous owner has changed the belt, or indeed the timing , the green toggle was missing from the bottom cover

Is this important ? - read the vw manual says it difficult to get the fuel pump set up exactly.

What would I do to improve the set up ? Just turn the pump anti clockwise till it matches the set up diagram ?

Would be grateful for tips and advice, thanks

I assume you used the locking keys but didn't loosen the nut to the pulley?
When you do up the tensioner the sprocket might jump to the next position and cause a slight rotation.
If you have the opportunity to reposition it (with the pegs in the cam etc) then I would do so.

It shouldn't really matter as it's a common rail with ecu controlled injectors, but I assume the designers looked at the way the pump works internally and decided to time the pump so that the micro surges in pressure caused by the internals of the pump are optimised to when the injectors are open...

I've finished the cam belt and water pump replacement. Took quite a bit longer than I expected, but happy with the result the engine definitely runs smoother, will be interesting to see if the mpg is better.

Things I found, on what should have been set at in the factory unless the previous owner changed them.

The slot on the cam for the timing pin was all the way to left and the fuel pump locator pin slot off to the right. The cam belt has 2017 stamped on it and didn't look particularly worn. 27k miles.

I watched a couple of you tube mechanics do the cambelt replacement, and whilst interesting to see how they did it, I found the only way to get the engine timing spot on was to follow the VW service manual (down loaded from the site thanks) exactly ! In particular you have to put the new belt on in a clockwise direction finishing on the water pump i.e. so the tensioner pulls the belt and cogs into the right position when you tighten it. Previous attempts ended up with the timing pin not fitting in the slot guide on the cam gear pulley and the fuel pump a long way out - clockwise. Pretty much as I found the settings with the old belt on.

Tools - you'll need a torex 10 key to undo the electric pump bracket - £1.99 stopped the job..... you can't get a 3/8th socket driver in there.

The TDC mark on the crank pulley is tiny, hard to find.

The crank seal was okay on mine - I wonder if some one had replaced it earlier ??

You have to take the drivers wheel off to do the job, to access the crank pulley.
