Another 20 inch tyre question! Moving from 245/45R20 to 255/40R20 - OK?

I have some new Leighton van LV-2, non-staggered 8.5j

I was going to put the same tyres as my old 20 inch wheels - 245/45R20 crossclimates, but seeing how often my missis likes to ding the wheels I was wondering if going slightly wider would offer more rim protection?

So thinking 255/40R20

Ever so slightly less sidewall but closer to the 'correct' oem fitment.

Is my though process correct? Will it offer more protection?

255/40 is a good size and will give you slightly more rim protection whilst yes, also being closer to OEM size. Bear in mind that premium tyres usually have more rim protection than budgets, but a tyre will only ever give a small amount of protection from curb impacts, it doesn't take much force to compress the tyre sidewall and scuff the rim.

Just make sure you're getting the load rating you need for your van.

So more swatting later and it seems you struggle to get all season 103 rated tyres (which I need for my Beach) in the 255 size.

Looks like I'm sticking with 245!
