Batten down the hatches!

I know the mantra is better safe than sorry but there's been a few OTT warnings recently which is denting confidence in these predictions. Stay safe Scottish brethren.

We've had the emergency alerts on our mobiles. I wondered what was going on as I was driving at the time

Aye, stay safe folks. My BiL is at our place on the west coast of South Uist and the island is well hunkered down.

Yep, its going to get windy in Wales soon also. I may lose a few more trees fortunately. I lost a lot in the last blow though many had Ash dieback and I think that some of the root systems had rotted. Some farmers take advantage of the weather and push some trees over with handlers or tractors with buckets or hedge cutter flails. Modern sheep farmers tend not to like trees very much.

When the last high winds Storm Dara came, we were cut off from electricity and without power for over 6 days and the telephone land line for 26 days. So let us see or not! We always have loads of large pillar candles and have quite a few oil lamps. Have loads of paraffin for the lamps also. Torches and mobile phones all charged not that the mobile network is that good here anyway, its a bit hit or a miss as it is and in the least storm not only was the phone line off the mobile network collapsed entirely also for quite some time. Just bought another ton of Home Fire Smokeless coal as the last two ran out recently and have wood of our own. Do not have any other form of heating anyway so it makes little difference that way and the Multi Fuel Stove has an oven conveniently built into the top of the fire section. Burn about 25kg a day in cold weather. The worst threat is a tree cumming down over the house or hitting a vehicle. Then their are flying branches and so on. So as it builds up we will move the vehicles to a slightly safer place taking note of wind direction. Our Water supply is also by electricity because it comes from a ground well way below the house. So no water no toilet just old fashion methods of disposal. I will relieve you all of the details unless someone really wants to know.

Through on another log dear!:)

Tesco have just sent an email saying stores local to me are closed tomorrow! So all schools and now Tesco are closed

Same over in NI. No bread in the shops....but wife did manage to get me some beers :) Emergency alerts on phone as well .... Keep safe everyone! Really hope it's overkill

My Mrs was at her book club at the pub about 3 miles away and got the alert this rvening, I didn't. Both of us outside the published red alert area by about 30 miles

If it is overkill, the “abuse” of warning systems will backfire. What does the blaring phone signal? Stay indoors? Evacuate the area? Don’t travel? Check that the greenhouse door is closed?!!

People tend to resent overt “Big Brother” eg repeatedly refusing ID cards yet merrily sharing vast amounts of data about themselves every day. The scale of the storm had better justify exposing the hidden phones of abused partners (and, indeed, the cheaters!)

Ha ha ha! During the “trial” I had my personal mobile beside my work mobile! Guess which didn’t signal until two days later?!!!

I have my phone locked away hardly ever use it. I received my trial alert ages after the official time when I eventually opened it up. what a carry on.

I was told to shut up my site today up in Fort William in readiness for the storm, with snow forecast for the surrounding area. Not long home after a 7hr drive and got tomorrow off to boot. The weather was the usual Scottish dampness. Our Galsgow office is also closed for the day as well tomorrow. Glencoe and the Highlands were showing snow from midnight until midday on the met office site today.
