Best navigation with downloadable maps

I switched from Googly maps to Waze about a year ago and it has been great, I love the fact it displays mph and tells you about all manner of happenings on the road ahead.
In the last month it has become laggy, to the point of distraction and annoyance with the map and speed displayed from half a mile ago, strangely the vocal instructions are spot on.
I reverted back to an older edition and it worked again, until I used it the next time then it was lagging once more.
I've now gone back to Maps again which is fine, and works, but doesn't give as good visual distructions as Waze.
Any ideas gentlefolk?
Running on Android... via the USB C input

I changed from Googly maps to Waze last year, worked well around the UK and in France. Weird given that they are both owned by Google...

Another like for Waze! love the fact u can interact with it to let others know of upcoming hazards etc .I had a hazard once that turned out to be a bloody big dead badger in the middle of the road :D

Many dead badgers found on roads are often as not, intensionally killed else where and just put on to the road to appear like an unfortunate but normal road kill!

Google maps now shows your speed, speed limits, incidents (interactively) and speed cameras. In fact all the stuff that differentiated Waze in the past
Are you saying you currently get your speed showing on Google maps? If so how?

I used to have that feature, but it disappeared. I searched high and low to see if was an option I'd inadvertently switched off - found nothing and just presumed it was a feature that had been withdrawn.

Maps does show mph when I'm not connected to the van via Android Auto. As soon as I plug in, it's gone!

It's just a toggle in settings "Show speedometer"

Speed limits displayed in Google maps are good. I use Google to search places out anyway so when plugged in it’s all ready to go. Haven’t used the VW nav for years.

Isnt saying about using Google maps offline a bit like saying you are going to download the internet so you have it on your phone? I know certain routes maps can be downloaded but is it really possible to download Europe or even France?

You can download as much or as little as you want with gmaps. I just download east Anglia normally as that’s the area I work in then add more if I’m travelling further afield

Sygic is good, shows current speed as well as camera, food, petrol stations along the route, directly on the map. So no need to "search" for them specifically as in Google. Select a petrol station as a way point then "rejoin" your original route

Highly recommended

Petrol, food appear on your route

I'm still a fan of Sygic as it's much better offline - it reminds you to update the maps so if you find yourself without signal you have them.

On road trips I tend to fire up both Sygic and Google:

Sygic I put my final destination in and I have the profile set to 50mph (as I find this is a good average speed to account for food and pee stops) - a feature Google doesn't have.

Google I use to plan the stops as it's got better search and search along the route.

Then I flip between them as needed on Android Auto - motorways Google is better with alerts sourced from Waze - back roads I find the Sygic "bend alerts" really useful and I use this in average speed areas as it does have live GPS Speedo.

Thanks RT, I'm going to give the free Sygic a go, then pay for it if I feel the need. Waze used to be great, but is still playing up with a half mile lag, and the speedometer showing me what speed I was doing half a mile ago!

Just given Sygic £12.99 for a years worth, just been walking round our building in Birmingum and can confirm the speedo works. I made a very respectable 4mph! Looks good, I'll try it properly laterer...
