Burning smell

So the van isn't being used much this time of year but when I do take it out on the school run some 4 miles round trip taking 20 mins when I return I'm noticing a burning oil smell is this common for short runs, to be honest never noticed it before it's guys had an oil fill yet change.... any help of advice would be much appreciated

As @Howzat says, it'll be trying to do a regen, but your repeated short journeys aren't allowing it to complete, so it will keep trying. Get it onto a motorway or A road , get the revs up to 2000-2500 rpm & hold it there for 20 mins. You risk getting the DPF light on otherwise. It needs a blast.

Take the van on a long run every week.
