Cadac, what’s the fuss all about?

Just been to my first meet up (Volks Fest Bristol) absolutely loved it, first time camping with my Kombi and two boys, (1 year old and 2 year old)

We have a cheap single gas hob. The wife would now like a double, which makes sense to be honest.

I see a lot of people have a Cadac, they are over £100, just wondering how they differ from the £40 gas hobs. I’ve seen ones with brands I recognise, not just cheap things off Amazon.

It’s a flame from a gas supply, as I missing something?

We use one , I find it's a pita to clean .
Puts me off using it if it's just to bbq a couple of things .
Like the pizza stone

Excellent, thank you very much

It depends a bit what you are comparing to. The Cadac 2 Cook range have a flat plate, griddle and normal pan rings so is pretty flexible. The 2 plates are really good quality non-stick so dead easy to clean. The general build quality is excellent too. The Campingas ones I’ve seen that look similar do not seem quite as nicely built but probably cook just as well. If you don’t need the plates and just want 2 rings to use your own pans with then one of those £20 single ring burners in a plastic case to go alongside what you have is a simple solution. Perfectly good, but arguably not as controllable or well built as a Cadac.

Must be me then, but I find the 2 plates hard to clean. Also notice that, if its not really level, you get hot spots where your food cooks quicker. And that bag is sh1t.

I have both a Cadac Safari Chef and Camping Gaz Party Grill (both you screw a small gas bottle underneath) - I agree with ginkster the Cadac is a bit better quality.

They both have a removable ring around the outside you fill with water catching any grease or fat making cleaning easier.

Lots of different ways to cook e.g. gas hob, BBQ, griddle, pizza stone (I don’t have that) so only need to bring one thing and in theory saving space.

Just a word of caution about suitcase stoves:

Never use the stove in a way that causes the canister to overheat – e.g. don’t use pans larger than the size of the ring/trivet - when the pot is too big, it concentrates the heat down toward the gas canister, causing it to overheat and explode. Don’t use Griddle Plates for the same reason.

Saw one explode at a festival but not sure what caused it. The fire quad bike arrived quickly and the chap got a golf buggy to the first aid tent and then the ambo took him off.
He was back next day with his arm all bandaged but partying like there’s no tomorrow.

We use one and have done for years without any worries but have always used pans that don’t go over the gas canister area. Must admit I can’t be faffed with anything else and love our cheap little Campingaz briefcase cooker.

Agree with this, I bought one of those single burners years ago for less than £20 in those days and still used for various tasks. Never bothered with our double burner after getting it. Was considering getting a second one but got a campervan instead.

I’ve not had mine long so maybe it gets harder to clean as it gets used more. A bit of a soak and the crud floats off. A bit of a scrub needed on the ridged plate. Mine is the 2 Cook 3 Deluxe model which has different plates to the 2 and the non-stick coating seems different so maybe that’s why we have different experiences. I don’t get hotspots when it’s not level but the food does slide downhill!! The bag is also different and seems ok so far. I wouldn’t pay full price but got it with a healthy discount at the NEC show.

I've gotta say, the quality of the Cadac remains, long after the price is forgotten! Just remember to put a bit of water in the base, makes cleaning so much easier. 907 cylinders. Third year now, we would have another if it was stolen! We use the cover as a bag, works well with a bit of bondage! I'm so lucky, I get to clean it!

I have the 2 cook 2 pro. I find that I cant turn the burners down low enough to create a gentle simmer, so need to stir the food constantly.
Agree, the bag is Sh1t.

We’ve had the safari chef for 4 years. Love how it just all goes bag in the bag really quickly, and how easy it is to get cooking. Having 3 legs means it’s easy to level it using a stone/ it of wood etc. we carry it to the beach or wherever really easily.
Yes it’s getting a bit of a pita to clean, but I normally attack the flat plate with the plastic spatula that I’m inevitably washing at the same time and it gets pretty clean.
Also have the extra lid which turns the standard top piece into a great cooking pot with a lid so you can do casseroles and curries etc. that also fits into the top of the bag.
I’d have another tomorrow no problem.
We also have one of the little £20 gas hob things for an extra ring if needed for an extra pan.

If you're just looking for a hob option then it's a +1 for the Campingaz option, we have >>THIS<< one.
More than adequate enough for my culinary genius whilst away.
