Anyone use a storage facility for their vw? Having very high levels of break in's and cars/Van's being nicked around us. Looking at local storage sites but never used one before so unsure how it will effect insurance. Any advice?

I think we are reasonably local to you (Nr Wolverhampton). We use one local to us which caters for caravans, motorhomes etc. It is a condition of our insurance that the van is generally stored overnight at this facility (which has a high security rating). It costs us about £550 a year, and there is often a waiting list.
When the van is there we also fit a wheel clamp, disklok and pedal clamp, just like we tend to do if it is on the drive when we are working on it.

Message me if you want more info.

We also have a storage facility on our premises - Penmil Storage in Yeovil- not near you unfortunately. Storage facilities have security ratings, gold, silver and bronze as detailed here - Find secure caravan storage across the UK That said, if someone wants to get in they will. Caravans are easier targets than a van as caravans have plastic windows and catches, vans have bonded windows and typically alarms so not an opportunist target.

Some insurance companies won’t insure storage facilities on industrial estates and some do. You need to check with your insurance company.

Hope this helps,

Place local to us is Gold rated. Recently they still managed to get in and have 4 Fords away. Apparently used drones to check the place out. Such a shame but if they are determined they will have it no matter what. All you can do is make it look like a bother to even try it.

A question for those who do use storage. Do you leave it outside? Do you use a cover and does the cover effect the bodywork/paintwork? I am debating the storage idea but would it be beneficial to pay for indoor storage/barn etc or go with a cover. In the past my vans have gone green fairly quickly when left.

I store my Motorhome in a Cassoa Gold Storage site with 24hr access via a digital card, which does reduce my insurance, but certainly not by anywhere near the amount I have to pay to store it. It's there more because it's way too big to leave outside my house without causing an issue with my neighbours.
I've never had or heard of any problems within my storage site.

Mine is outside, and under a cover. I've gone into detail on covers before, as it's part of what we deal with within my business, as in the damage they can cause, and rectifying this damage.
A quick easy rule of thumb for any cover use: Never cover a vehicle that's not perfectly clean. Always make sure the cover fits nice, and any loose parts of the cover are strapped up.
Follow these rules, and you won't have any issues using a cover, ignore either of these rules and you will need a very costly detailer to fix your issues.

As for indoor storage. The only issues i've seen or heard of are potential mice damage or bird poo if it's a barn/farm building. This is why I choose to store outside, and use a cover, where both of the above issues can also occur, along with many others, but it's a necessary part of my Motorhome ownership, and I long for the day we can find the right house that has the room to store my MH, as well as everything else.
Bare in mind that the issues are only a small amount of cases in the overall scheme of indoor storage, but it happens.

Agreed terms for a space from the same place at Pete above. Looks as secure as it can be. Being waying the pro's and con's all weekend and the pro's just about come out on top. Just such a shame that I'm (we) are being forced into such action because of the scum of this country. This along with an ever increasing CCTV system to try and put them off. Mrs work was attacked again over the weekend. Started to take the wall out again (3rd time). They have CCTV which is monitored and when the operator confronted them via the speaker system they just carried on

Sheesh, even a brick wall isn't a deterrent anymore. What were they after?

They have been inside a few times over the last 6 months and seen a very old, large and very heavy safe. Even tried to pull it through the hole in the wall last time! The work only leave in a little bit of petty cash under £20. Must think it's got thousands inside. Love to see the look on there face if (or when) they eventually get it out and open :D
