Daytime Running Light gone - warning on dash?

A light has come on my dash and it's the day driving light I think as one has gone out. I have a t6 and the light has a blue tinge to it. Is this a standard bulb? I've read about its possibly a big job to change for some reason? Strange to just change a bulb.

Depends on your headlights. Do you have H4 (with the DRL in the large reflector near the centre) or H7 with (DRL below the low beam reflector)?

They use different but standard bulbs and can be changed with reasonable ease.

For H4, it should be fairly straightforward. Excerpt from the manual below.

Blue tinge means a 'white' aftermarket bulb, to get away from the yellowy standard look.

So best replace both, it might look very odd otherwise, if you can't match the old one!

I've been to halfords and he told me it's led bulb and they can't touch it as its not original. I've just tried to get it out to check the bulb but can't figure out how to get it out, whether it's twisted in or pushed etc. I'll have a better look tomorrow now. Thank you

Hi. Don’t know if you could give me any advice too, I have the same problem, the DRL On the near side has gone out with the warning light now on the dashboard, behind the light is the battery. I took this out but the bulb seems to sit below which I couldn’t get access to. The van was in vw for a service so I asked them if they would replace the bulb ,
Only to say it was a wiring fault and they would need to take the bumper off to get to the light, quoted me £280 to do this job.
Personal I think they are lying and it’s nothing to do with the wiring, any help would be appreciated. Thanks Sean.
Are mine H7 by looking at my pics.

Yours are H7. There is an issue on these DRLs where the contacts can fail where the bulb holder attaches to the reflector. The fix is to remove the old holder, and splice in a new one, hardwired inside the light.

Sean replacing the DRL bulb on the H7 headlight unit without removing the whole headlight unit is pretty much impossible. That’s why VW are telling you it’s a wiring issue…. removal of the bumper/grill to then remove the headlight unit is inevitable.

Don’t be afraid to tackle this job yourself (depending on your DIY capabilities of course)…. take a look at this YouTube video….

FWIW, I’ve replaced the DRLs twice in mine without removing the headlight. It’s awkward but certainly do-able. I removed the top of the air box for the driver’s side.

@Mr sean As yours is pre MY2019, the chances are the bulb holder will have melted. As mentioned earlier in the thread, this needs to be replaced with the updated part. The headlight needs to be removed to do this job.

I would go back to VW and tell them that this is a known fault and due to the part being proven as not fit for purpose, perhaps it should be repaired as a good will gesture. I guess depending on what sort of VW history rhe van has will determine what they have to say.

If they don't play ball, it's not a difficult job to tackle yourself if you follow the video guide from THQ. Whilst the bumper is off, it would make sense to replace the other side as well.

As someone on here pointed out and I then confirmed in practice, taking the whole bumper off isn’t necessary - can just do one side at a time. Makes it much easier to align and fix back, and only needs one person. Simple job really.

I used the VW DRL bulb holder repair kit on mine. Think it was 35 quid per side from memory. Once the headlight is on your work bench it’s a simple soldering job.

So from what you’re saying this is a common fault which could well be true, I would still like to try changing the bulb 1st. Can you give me advice on how to get to the bulb please .
Thanks for reply.

the bulb holder has a long plastic extension on it and you turn it slightly anti-clockwise (if you’re looking at the back of the headlight) and then pull it out. It’s easier to remove the air box lid for the driver’s side.

Make sure you put the air box lid back properly so it seals and the air filter works effectively.

When removing the top of the air box with the 4 clips, do you also loosen the large hose clip and pull the pipe off so it can be removed completely?

Yes, and the electrical connection.

I do, but make sure to remove the electrical connector so as not to stress the wires on the air sensor.

Make sure the inside of the pipe doesn’t get any dirt or foreign objects in.
