display phone data without the media being on

I'm the proud owner of a Pre Reg Euro 5 model, just got it this week.
But I think I need to go to evening classes to work out how to use the Radio/Comms Unit.
I don't even know what version it is and the owners manual may as well be written in Chinese.

Anyway someone must know the answer:
I don't want the radio on or the SD card or CD, but I want to be able to see the "Phone Screen"
I dont think I had a problem when I picked it up the other day, but I cant get any display except the clock unless I have the radio turned on.

I must have poked some setting with my fat fingers but what have I done?

All suggestions gratefully received.

I think I'm going to be here a lot asking silly questions.
Cheers in Advance.

Not sure that you can get anything on the standby screen other than the clock display. To access the telephone screen you have to have the unit turned on. If you don't want any media to play then you could hit mute and then just leave it on the telephone screen. Your alternative is to leave the head unit on standby and have the phone screen up on the MFD.

Turn the radio volume to minimum (off) and change to phone display ?

Thanks Pauly, I think that was the first thing I tried. I'll try that again though.

Thanks DaveyB, your solution is probably that one that works, but it sounds like a work around.

If this is the case, perhaps I'm the only person on the planet not to need music wherever I go.

I'll give it another twiddle when I've fitted my racking hopefully later today.

Thanks guys anyway for answering so quick its only my first visit to the forum, Cheers!

Sorry DaveyB ... whats the MFD .... I know VW stans for Volks Wagon and thats about it.
In a Porsche they have a unit called PCM "Porkers Comms Module".
My Misses was shocked it did not have sat nav built in, I said "pre reg beggars cant be choosers".
Is there an upgrade path that reasonably priced or is it stick the Garmin on the windscreen?

@Silver Turfer Welcome to the Forum where there are plenty of people ready to help as you are finding out. To answer your latest, MFD is the Multi Function Display and it is situated between the dials behind the steering wheel. As for the sat nav it would require a brand new head unit if you want VW as it is not possible to transfer units from another vehicle for "security reasons". Cheapest and easiest, and what @T6 Dave is doing, is to put a Garmin or Tom Tom on the screen. Note that with the standard dash there is a nice A4 tray in the centre top of the dash which is an alternative location that I would favour. Hope this helps you.

@Silver Turfer the MFD is the multi function display, or simply put it's the rectangular display that sits between the speedo and tachometer in the instrument cluster. By using the buttons on the right side of the steering wheel you can alter what is displayed in that screen.
If I am understanding what you are after correctly, then turn the head unit on, thurn the volume to zero, press the phone button. This is the only way I can think that you'll have the phone screen displayed without any music.
As to the sat nav, couple of choices. Either get a head unit that has it as a feature, there are aftermarket ones such as Alpine and Kenwood that fit, or get hold of a VW Discover unit, the maps are then held on an SD card that you leave in the unit. The alternative and the cheaper is to get something like a Garmin.

Thanks Dave & Dav's Dad
I did press the mute button and it works like that OK
Its a loverly van and although its really just a face lift its so much sweeter than the T5 I had.
I like a lot of the feature even the engine cut out while stationary.
I don't like the fact that I've got to dip the clutch on startup though, this is probably something thought up by the EU on a quite day.
There is something I haven't checked yet ...
When you remotely unlock the van do you only have a limited period before the van decides to lock itself again unless you open the cab?
Is there a setting to over ride that "feature"?

A friend with a new Transit got locked out of his van at a motorcycle meeting the other day ... 180 mile round trip to get the spare set of keys.

I'll have to go and look at other sections of the Forum to get a feel for the traffic.

Nice Meeting you all.

PS:
I'm going to get a vent mount for the Garmin and stick it on the passengers side centre air vent and use a very short USB cable to power it up.

Mine auto relocks after approx 30 secs if no doors are opened

@Silver Turfer I do believe that you can turn the auto re-lock feature off via VCDS if you are near anyone that has got one. It only relocks if you have not opened a door, so seems a bit odd that your friend managed to get their keys in their van for them to get locked in it, would they not have to have opened the door to put the keys inside?
However, in my much younger (and way more stupid days) I'd left the drivers side window of my Escort RS Turbo cracked. Unlocked it, and then a mate asked for a hand carrying something, and as I had a pair of shorts on with no pockets, had the mega brainy idea of putting the keys on the seat; via the part open window! It took a moment to register what I had done and by that time it had relocked, and the gap was too small to get my arm in. Bugger! Good job I grew up in Leicester and know how to get into a car.

Hi DaveyB,
It was a Ford Transit (Silly Lugger) and you can open the back throw your wet motor cycle gear into it and then slam the door and hey presto.

I've just spent the evening sticking panels of Sound deadening material on the back of the bulkhead, its really hard to tell if its worthwhile, but it feels good.
I've got to work out how to set up the speed limiter next.

Also there seems to be some sort of screen saver sheet of plastic on the touch screen panel screen thing. (I don't know its real name yet)
I wonder if these are replaceable?
As I imagine it will save the screen from greasy digits and scratchy fingernails.

Silver Turfer - Oh no you're not!

Use the speed warning by all means but don't get the speed limiter set (VCDS function) as it's impossible to un-set it!!! Well maybe the ECU chipping folks could do it but no doubt at a serious cost!!

I think that if you use the 'Mute' function the telephone ringer and hands free are also muted, by turning the radio volume down it leaves the former still active. Silver Turfer I like you am discovering the new technology of a 'Highline' T6 although I do have the inbuilt sat-nav.

Dipping the clutch to start come second nature to me as I began driving in the days when a gearbox added considerable drag on the engine/starter when cold. Dipping the clutch relieved that and made cold starting easier.

Hi Rod,
Thanks for the good advice, I think I'll just leave it.
Oh yes I remember clutch dipping when cold .. mine was and Austin A40 Somerset
What was yours?
Talking about the speed warning ... This morning I've got the speed warning set (don't know how I did that)
But its set to 20mph
Also the digital speedo is displaying the velocity in Kph .. nice, when I'm wooshing down the Auto Piste de Sol .. but would be even better since "Brexit means Bu99er all" to have it in Imperial units.
More twiddling with the thinga me jig rather than reading the papers this morning.

@rod_vw ref speed limiter, yeh heard that even if it's set from mfd, you can only set it lower afterwards, needs a reflash of Ecu to reset to factory I believe, but won't be playing with that one to find out!

You can use the reset to factory settings, it will clear the speed alarm settings if you can't adjust it.

@DaveBos Aha, thought it was a strange one, but not gotten hold of my beastie yet (soon with any luck). So is the reset via the mfd or vagcom?

Rather than get the service pack and the Owners Manual out, I thought I would search on line for a manual I could scan and search.
I cant find it though .. I though an on-line manual would be a No Brainer.
:(

Pretty sure I have seen it at the bottom of the MFD menu.
