Hi all,

Anybody else got a Dometic grill in their camper and find it opens whilst driving all the time?

I've found the grill tray can move and cause it so I've used some grippy mat to stop this - it helps but not a complete cure.

Any other tips for stopping it opening when going round a corner?

Cheers

Superglue a thin magnet to the inside of the glass door, where it meets the metal frame ?

Pete

Clip one end of a bungee into the vents at one end then wrap the other end around the handle a couple of times and clip that to the vents at the other end.

There is already a magnet in the door, the central metal part on the top edge. It's not very strong though!

The magnet on mine is very strong. Is the door connecting properly with the magnet?
Is the heat shield interfering with the door closing fully?

Ha, we have exactly the same problem and it’s caused by water rusting away the magnet at the top of the frame which holds the door closed. It holds, or did, against the steel inset piece at the top of the door.
We found the rusty and manky magnet on the floor, if only they had used decent screws whatever - very disappointed and yet to find a permanent fix.A4D2468C-842E-4A47-BD1E-AB860B83E77F.jpeg

The heat shield did work itself quite loose so I've adjusted that and that's much stiffer and doesn't push on the door.

My magnet does have a little rust on yes but it's not detached from the main body of the grill. Did you have this issue before your magnet detached?

Nope it was fine until it dropped off a rusty mess, are you sure all yours is there?

Aha, just been out to mine to have another look and the magnet is actually on the underside of the heat shield so pull it out and have a look underneath and I hope you don’t find this

Mine isn't that bad, it's all intact if a little surface rust! I can feel it pull the door in a little too but it's not strong.

Update on this...originally I thought my idea of adding a stronger magnet wasn't working as they seemed to demagnetise. A bit of googling and I see that magnets can demagnetise at a certain temperature. For the last few weeks I've been trying this again but removing the additional magnet before using the grill and so far so good, it's still holding.

I'm using a neodymium magnet in a rectangular shape which I originally bought to upgrade the magnets in Scalextric cars. This fits on top of the existing magnet and gives a firm hold of the door. Hope this helps others.

I find that when you use the grill the magnet gets very hot, which will demagnetise it.

if they’d only put the magnet on the door instead, that wouldn’t be a problem.

What size of flame should you expect from these grills? Tried mine for the first time there and I'd say the flames are maybe 1cm - 1.5cm in length, seemed lower than I was expecting and on full power. I wasn't quite expecting oven levels of flame but want to rule out there being an issue?

Cheers

That sounds about right I'd say.
