DSG engine labouring juddering in D7

Hi Loz, just got back from garage…£12k estimate for gearbox, flywheel, prop shaft, drive shafts, cardigan shaft…. In a bit of shock now. Only took it in to check out that rattle/vibration. So, now on the lookout for a couple of reputable places between Oxon and North Devon to get a second opinion/diagnosis/quote
Would Salisbury way be okay for you? There is a crowd there who do nothing but gearboxes - could be better

I’d be visiting a transmission specialist with a rolling road so that it can be checked while running.
Even if the mechanic has no idea they should still start with the cheap easy option like one driveshaft at a time not everything from the flywheel out to the wheels in one hit.

Just saw the message re drive shafts. Had mine replaced 4 months ago, with a air con top up came to just over £800. However now wished I had have had the inner bearings replaced at the same time, as I still get some vibration on acceleration. The inner are a lot more expense labour wise. Hope that helps.

I just re-read the OP and I'm going to answer again filling in the thoughts I had at the time but didn't write down.

After reading the OP I thought this could be 2 things;
1. Labouring in 7th, as we have all had, and the TVS DSG map sorts that out.

2. Juddering; is this vibration caused by ageing transmission components?

For the first point, could the engine be down on power due to a leak in the induction side, ie leaking turbo pressure, thus leading to an exaggerated labouring when the gearbox is in 7th and needing to "kick down" to select a lower gear (TVS map also removes the need to kick down)

Is the transmission causing the labouring or is the juddering really vibration?

I would think about it in this order;
Is the 4 motion Haldex drive stuck ON, causing it to be permanently in 4wd and driving the rear axel?
Are the drive shafts worn (it's 100K miles)
Is the flywheel gone (dual mass issues we all know about)
finally, the gearbox, but hardly hear about DSG failures compared to the items above.

Thanks Loz, that’s really helpful. I’ve been towing more than usual in last couple,of months…caravan c300 miles, and horse box 200 miles a couple of times on top of weekly short journeys, and a couple of 1 hour journeys close to towing limit of 2.5 tonnes. Have also done a couple of 800 mile caravan trips in last 2 years. Also have a camper conversion which weighs 392kg all in. So I’m wondering if that is understandably going to cause some hefty wear and tear on gearbox and transmission components. Have been expecting a new gearbox at some point because of this but hadn’t expected all to go at once. Garage took prop shaft off to eliminate rear drive shafts and confirmed back end ok, so the quote was for everything prop shaft forwards. They said DMF rattle is clearly audible if you lift bonnet when idling. Said they got a specialist in to check this and he confirmed it. So I think I’m at point of getting a second opinion on the diagnosis and then find a good garage with more competitive prices!

On that extra info, I personally would have a new DMF fitted and have the TVS upgrade done and see how it feels.

Hey Lorna. Did you have any joy with sorting this problem as mine does exactly the same? Same spec vehicle as yours.

Taking it in to another garage (previously recommended on forum) for a second opinion and diagnosis and hopefully smaller estimate! Will post outcome here

Update on this…I took the van to another garage for a second diagnosis. After a test drive with me they said they thought it felt and sounded like the DMF. So they replaced that as a first step. Just picked it up today and it seems to have solved the problem…no more labouring in 7th etc. Really pleased. Not a cheap job replacing the DMF but WAY better than the daft quote I had from previous garage. Thanks for all your advice on here

I can’t believe @Loz got it right so quickly

That’s great news.

I would recommend you get the TVS software now as this will help prevent this happening again. It won’t allow the gearbox in 7th at 42mph, which is a massive issue on these.

Out of interest, what difference would it make to drive around in the sport gear? It seems to also prevent gears changing up to early?

It also prevents any sort of smooth progress! I think you'd soon tire of driving everywhere like nodding dogs. Much better to get the TVS map improved the gearbox on my TSI no end and upped the mpg.
