What about the condition of the splines in the gearbox? The driveshaft might only be half the problem leading to premature failure of the new one?

It would be nice to think that VW manufacturers the gearbox with a harder surface than the drive shaft but I doubt it.

I did wonder if one was made as a sacrificial part!

I cannot get over how dry / rusty it is!

As the mech said the gearbox side spline is ok. No need to replace it (but looking at the video it looks horrendous).Maybe the shaft is the sacrificial part?
How it ends up like that? Would grease make it better or even worse?

Corrosion requires oxygen, if it’s coated in grease it must be better.
