Dsg oil and filter change

From memory the only thing I used vcds for was to confirm oil temp was over 40degC (would confirm this as from memory)
But you would probably get that value from a generic obd reader

Yeah all you need is to know gear oil temp, and the level tube is built into the drain plug anyway, there is a scope of temperatures that it should be between when checking the level you can use a infrared thermometer on the gearbox casing.
They are always overfilled from Volkswagen anyway if you get one for the first oil change

Hello never thought I would send a post but I am interested to know what you think about my recent T6 experience.

Dropped my van off today (2016 shuttle 204 with dsg) to get an oil change at 34k miles. Cautious I know but I thought well it’s 4 years old etc and I’m a worrier so I thought let’s get it sorted ready for the end of COVID when we’re free

They did their inspection with video and picked a few things which I’ll sort out with my local garage in due course. The main issue was a leaking dsg gearbox end cap (circular cap apparently). I don’t doubt it is leaking as the video is clear and they advised the new part was cheap but it would be costly to replace in labour-and I trust that is the case they seem very straightforward. Overall cost is £388. I automatically being a cheap skate asked for goodwill as the van has always been serviced by V W but before my time and the answer was a straight no from Germany which is what I expected.

My question is: Is the defect common and is £388 reasonable in terms of expected labour for this job and if anyone has heard of this before. I agreed as I thought to myself I’d better get this done by V W it being a dsg box and apparently requiring special-tool(s) on order at their cost.

My oil change amounts to £204 basic (london) plus the leak fix at £388. Ouch!

Any thoughts welcome to reassure that I was right to crack on and let them get on with it or not !

Cheers Joe

If the part is cheap then find a specialist that's labour charge is more palatable. Vw labour is expensive and they are no more skilled that most specialists.

Jeekers! I’m not mechanically minded (and I eagerly await the opinions of this who are) but those figures make my eyes weep!

@Niknak @Robert @Dellmassive @DXX - any views folks?

erm have you been reading the two turbo failure thread

I’d say you done the right thing in having it done, if you are not able to do yourself dsg are a nightmare if they go wrong but great if kept serviced and ticking over

Without knowing what seal/plug was leaking could not pass comment really but the oil change price sounds about right as the oil is not cheap
Ooof! £388 on TOP of the £200 he paid for the oil change? I should have paid more attention at school...!

We don’t know what the leak was, I love driving dsg but hate working on them
Good point! I’m too busy throwing my hands in the air in horror at the price without even knowing what it was for!!!

Be interesting to see if the seal that was fixed if the vehicle procedure included an oil change anyway as don’t think should have been charged full price for oil change in this case

Guys Thankyou very much for your support. I believe it is a end cap (round disk in the side of the gearbox from the video) from the conversation today. I think I will ask nicely whether the two different tasks overlap time wise as you say.
To be fair given the patchy history of dsg gearboxes of a few years back I’m actually grateful its only something minor as if it was anything significant it would have been the straw that broke the camels back taking into account COVID!
My best mate was sucking through his teeth when I said I was going to buy a dsg model and I’ll expect he’ll dine out on this one if we ever get a chance to get out again. I’ll report back the exact replacement part when I know more for future reference. Cheers Joe

They would do as after the repair the gearbox level would have to be checked and set and the procedure carried out, have you had the bill yet ?

No idea what the labour / parts breakdown is but cold gear oil runs dead slow, if it’s on the lift while the oil dribbles out it’s getting charged.
I avoided buying a DSG for two reasons; I don’t mind using my left hand and it’s a very complicated and expensive addition that is bound to develop problems over time.
I opted for a 180ps manual so I don’t have to change gear very often.

Including vat yes excluding oil change at an extra £204 inc vat. Total £542 unless there has been miscommunication which I doubt sadly.
