Engine knocking under idle

Over the past week I've noticed my engine sounding a bit rough when idling. Knocking a little.
On Wednesday I had to add 1litre of coolant and then I had to do the same again today.
Do you think it's the EGR cooler? I've just recently had the EGR mapped out as it was starting to play up. Had the EGR pipe replaced last year.

Definitely engine and not dmf?
Very valid question, but the recent coolant loss is very likely linked to the knocking, I think.

Any signs of coolant in the oil or an oily scum in the coolant?

Is it loosing coolant when it’s not being driven?
If I were you I would stop driving it until it’s repaired, a litre of coolant going through the engine is not going to help with the repair bill.

I’d get a sniff test does rough idle and slight knock would point to poor combustion so maybe the presence of coolant in the cylinder

I haven't used the van since yesterday, but I looked underneath today and there's coolant dripping from the undertray, so it looks like there's something split.....off to the garage she goes. Hopefully just a split hose.

Not sure what's making it knock......

Verdict delivered.....

The knocking and the loss of coolant are not connected. But.... There's a hole in the radiator (hopefully some K-Seal will sort that!)

Seems the knocking is the beginning of the end for my DMF . I'd hoped to get away without a big bill.

In the circumstances described it would have been logical to think that the symptoms were probably linked, as always without seeing the vehicle it's always about probabilities, hence why I used the word "likely". Give yourself a pat on the back though!

Cheers lads....in a weird way I'm glad it's nothing too serious. Going to get the DMF done now rather than wait for it to get worse....might just drop a new rad in too.

Can't complain really, as its the first big bill I've had in 4 years.....

Glad you got it sorted.
There shouldn’t be any big bills other than purchasing the van.
We can send a space probe to Mars but not design a simple transmission system to last.
My 20 year old A4 got a new DMF and clutch at well over 200K miles, the DMF was still functional. Built when manufacturers gave a shit.

You're not wrong! Only Transporters seem to suffer this crap!! My old X5 has 160K and never missed a beat. Shocking how much we pay for vans and how the same stuff keeps wearing out.

Saw a nice Transit custom yesterday..........

If it was running without any injector issues, or hasn't put a rod through the case then it's a rare beast. Transits also suffer from battery, oil pump, dpf, dmf and steering rack issues, along with poor security and rusty inner arches.
And the seats are really uncomfortable.

and the main detail....no way can a Ford replace my T6 :)

....and rusty inner arches.

This was the main reason I went with a T6 this time. The Mk7 I had was running fine but the rust was just abhorrent. I was going to replace with a Custom as the rust issues on them don't seem as bad but then I saw my T6 for the same price as a Custom. SOLD!
